GETTING STARTED:
This game requires Microsoft Windows and a mouse. To Play, All
Shift Zone Files must be located in the same directory, and
this directory must be set as the default. If all files are in
a Directory called C:\SZ1, for example, you can set up the game
by going to the 'FILE' option within Program Manager, Select
'NEW' and then 'Program Item', then specify the name and Path
to this game. If The Icon already exists, use the 'FILE' and
'PROPERTIES' menu to change the Working Directory.
This game looks best when all other windows have been minimized.
After starting Shift zone, you can 'minimize' other windows by
clicking on their minimize button at the upper-right corner of
a window. (The minimize button looks like a triangle pointing
down).
HOW TO PLAY:
Shift Zone consists of a large amount of Puzzles. Each Level
features 12 different puzzles that you can play randomly. After
a puzzle is solved, you may no longer play it. Once you solve
all 12 puzzles for a level, you are allowed to begin playing the
next set of puzzles for the next level.
The object of the game is simple -- turn all zones into Shift
Zones (a zone is a colored rectangle within the play area).
Each Zone will have a value from 1 to 6, also obvious by a shade
of color. Note: As the mouse cursor moves over zones, a number
at the lower-right corner (beside the score and level marker)
will also change to indicate the zone value. Beside this number
is also a piece letter (A to Z) for documenting purposes... you
could make a note of each piece by its letter with a log of how
many times you pressed each one.
When you click on a zone, it will decrement by 1 -- its color will
also decrement. A Shift Zone appears when a zone reaches a value
of 1. Sounds simple, right? Well, it might be, except that when
you click and shift a zone, all zones it touches (although not
diagonally) will also shift. This can be very brain-bending. (If
you get stumped, remember to register so you can receive the
Complete Solution).
Ah, but that's not all. The game would still be fairly easy if
that was all. When a zone becomes a Shift Zone, it is volatile.
So, you can't click that zone anymore. If you do, it will just
explode. Also, you can't click an zone that touches a shift zone
because it will also explode! If it still sounds easy, just give
it a go. Oh, and try not to pull out too much hair or bite your
nails or scream or go on an ax-murdering rampage. It's a game!
HIGH SCORE TABLE:
Shift Zone tracks the highest scores, which are saved to the
default directory. Under the ScoreBoard menu, you can also reset
the High Score table.
Scoring works this way: You get 5 points for each zone you direct-
ly shift, plus two points for each shifted zone it touches. Your
score is saved in memory at the completion of each puzzle. If you
have to replay a puzzle, your scores returns to what it was at the
end of the last completed puzzle. You may always continue within
a play session -- you don't have to start the game over if you mess
up, but you do have to start the puzzle over.
Your score is only reset when you load a saved game, or when you
first start a new game.
SAVE/RESTORE GAME:
This is very useful. While Playing, you can Select 'Save' from
the 'File' menu. You are given 10 positions to save a file, so
only 10 games may be saved at once. (Be sure to type a descrip-
tion before saving so you know what save is what).
You may also restore a saved game. Take note: The game will
restore to the saved level with all puzzles completed that were
completed at the time of the save. Since you can only save a
game in the middle of a puzzle, that puzzle will not show as
completed, plus no shifts made to the zones in that puzzle will
be saved. Just remember, your saves only capture the state of all
completed puzzles.
CONTINUING:
This is also a useful feature of Shift Zone. Under the 'File' menu
you may choose to 'Choose new puzzle'. This can be done at any time
during or after a game is over. If you continue during a game, you
will loose the puzzle you were playing and get to choose a new (or
the same) puzzle to play. Or, you can choose to begin a new game
which will reset your score and reset any puzzles you completed.
IN CLOSING:
Good luck. That's all I can say. Well, okay, here's one hint: In
this game, the 'Order' isn't as important (in most cases) as the
number of clicks per zone. The solutions usually lie simply in
deciding which blocks to click, and how many times, so the order of
pressing them may not matter -- in some cases, however, beware.
We hope you enjoy this game and we hope you are honest enough to
register it. Enjoy!
