  131. ===== Installation =====================================
  132.  
  133. Ad Hoc is a Windows program.  It requires Microsoft Windows version 3.1
  134. and requires about 4MB of disk space.  If you are installing Ad Hoc over
  135. a previous version, read the section "Installing over a previous
  136. version".
  137.  
  138. Installing from the ADHOC.ZIP distribution file
  139. ----------------------------------------------- 
  140.  
  141. If you have downloaded Ad Hoc from an information service or bulletin
  142. board, or received if from some other form of shareware distribution, it
  143. will be in a .ZIP file or some other compressed file format.  The files
  144. in the Ad Hoc distribution set are listed in the section above labeled
  145. "Packing List".  If any of the files in the set are missing, you may not
  146. be able to properly install Ad Hoc.
  147.  
  148. Once you have unzipped the distribution file, you must run the INSTALL
  149. program that is part of the distribution file set.  This is a Windows
  150. program, so you must run it using the File|Run command of the Program
  151. Manager (or the File Manager).
  152.  
  153. You may install Ad Hoc in the directory containing the unzipped files,
  154. or in a different directory.  We recommend that you install Ad Hoc in
  155. its own directory: C:\ADHOC.
  156.  
  157. The install program will create the installation directory you designate
  158. if it doesn't already exist.  It will also create a subdirectory called
  159. SAMPLE in this directory and copy the sample data files to it.  You can
  160. also request that the install program create a Program Manager group for
  161. Ad Hoc.
  162.  
  163. NOTE: If you install Ad Hoc in the same directory to which you unzipped
  164. the distribution files, The file named ADHOC.EX_ is changed to
  165. ADHOC.EXE.  This is an indication to the install program that Ad Hoc has
  166. already been installed, and it will not install again.  If you install
  167. to a different directory, you can run the install program again.
  168.  
  169. NOTE: The install program will automatically create a new installation
  170. directory, but its parent directory must already exist.  For example if
  171. you designate the install directory as C:\ADHOC, that's OK.  If you
  172. designate C:\EVAL\ADHOC, C:\EVAL must already exists, otherwise you will
  173. get an error message.
  174.  
  175. Installing from Diskettes
  176. ------------------------- 
  177.  
  178. The evaluation version of Ad Hoc is also supplied on a 2-disk
  179. installation set.  If you are installing Ad Hoc from these installation
  180. diskettes, insert Disk 1 into drive A: or B: and from the Program
  181. Manager or the File Manager, select the Run command on the File menu and
  182. enter A:SETUP (or B:SETUP).
  183.  
  184. The setup program will ask you for the directory on your hard disk that
  185. Ad Hoc will be installed into.  The default program directory name
  186. suggested is C:\ADHOC, but you can change it if necessary.  The setup
  187. program will install Ad Hoc and all of its support files into this
  188. directory, and sample data files in a subdirectory called SAMPLE.
  189.  
  190. Changes Ad Hoc installation makes to your system configuration
  191. --------------------------------------------------------------
  192.  
  193. Ad Hoc installation makes the following changes to your system
  194. configuration files, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI:
  195.  
  196. WIN.INI
  197.   Adds the line following line to the [Extensions] section:
  198.     DDF=D:\ADHOC\ADHOC.EXE ^.DDF
  199.  
  200. SYSTEM.INI
  201.   Adds the following lines to the [386Enh] section, if not already there:
  202.     device=VSHARE.386
  203.     UniqueDOSPSP=true
  204.  
  205. If the install program makes any changes to you system.ini file, it will
  206. first makes a backup of your original file.  The install program will
  207. also place a copy of the files CTL3DV2.DLL and VSHARE.386 into the
  208. windows system directory, if they are not already there.
  209.  
  210. Starting Ad Hoc
  211. ---------------
  212.  
  213. To start Ad Hoc click on its icon in the Program Manager, or from the
  214. Program Manager or File Manager, select the Run command on the File
  215. menu and enter the command
  216.

  218.  
  219. Installing over a previous version
  220. ----------------------------------
  221.  
  222. You should install Ad Hoc 1.2 in the same directory as a previous
  223. version.  The new files will overwrite the old files, but if you want to
  224. insure a clean installation, delete the old ADHOC directory first.  Ad
  225. Hoc 1.2 is compatible with databases developed with earlier versions.
  226. However, version 1.2 stores report, form, and list designs in a
  227. different format than older versions.  Once you have begun using Ad Hoc
  228. version 1.2 with a particular database, you may experience errors if you
  229. revert to an older version.
  230.  
  231. If You Don't Run Windows in the 386 (Enhanced) Mode
  232. ---------------------------------------------------
  233.  
  234. If you will be running Ad Hoc in a Windows mode other than the Enhanced
  235. (386) mode, you must install the DOS SHARE driver to enable the Ad Hoc
  236. record locking feature.  If you will be running in 386 mode (the normal
  237. mode for 386 processors and above), you do not have to install SHARE.
  238.  
  239. The SHARE.EXE driver must be installed before you run Windows (do not do
  240. it from a DOS window running under Windows).  To load share, at the DOS
  241. prompt, enter SHARE.  SHARE.EXE is located in your DOS directory.  Then
  242. start Windows.  For convenience, put the SHARE command in your
  243. AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (If you start Windows in your AUTOEXEC, make sure the
  244. SHARE command is first.)
  245.  
  246. Optional
  247. --------
  248.  
  249. Ad Hoc uses several DLLs that may already be installed on your disk for
  250. other programs.  To save disk space, you can move these DLLs to your
  251. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for use by all programs.  Any DLLs that you
  252. copy to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory can be deleted from the ADHOC
  253. directory.  These DLLs are:

  261. DB.DLL and AHUTIL.DLL are Ad Hoc private libraries; there is no need to
  262. move them from the Ad Hoc directory

  264. IMPORTANT:  If you have several copies of a particular DLL on your disk,
  265. make sure that you put the latest copy (by file date)in the
  266. WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory before you delete the other copies.

  276. period.  If you continue to use Ad Hoc after the evaluation period, you

  278. violation of U.S. and international copyright laws.

  316. This evaluation ("Shareware") version of Ad Hoc and accompanying files
  317. and documentation are licensed "as is" and without any warranty as to
  318. performance or fitness for any particular use, or any other warranties
  319. expressed or implied. The user must assume the entire risk of using this
  320. program.  If you have paid the registration fee for a license to use the
  321. software, and have received a registered version of the software from
  322. ExLogica, ExLogica warrants that the disks provided are free from
  323. defects in material and workmanship, assuming normal use, for a period
  324. of 90 days from the date of registration.  If a defect in the disk
  325. occurs during this warranty period, you may return the disk(s) for a
  326. replacement.

  328. EXLOGICA DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT
  329. NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A

  355. "Evaluation (Shareware) Version of Ad Hoc":  The evaluation version of Ad
  356. Hoc displays the words "Unregistered Ad Hoc" in the title bar of the
  357. main window, and the designation "Evaluation Copy" in the client area of
  358. the main window.  Only copies of this version of Ad Hoc may be
  359. distributed as Shareware, subject to the terms set forth below.  Other
  360. versions of Ad Hoc not so marked are registered, or retail, versions and
  361. may not be distributed as Shareware.
  362.  
  363. "Shareware Distribution Package":  The Shareware Distribution Package
  364. refers to the evaluation version of Ad Hoc, plus exact copies of all the
  365. files listed in the Packing List section of this ADHOC.DIZ file.
  366.  
  367. "Ad Hoc Application": For the purpose of this agreement, and Ad Hoc
  368. Application is defined as any combination of Ad Hoc database designs,
  369. form layouts, report formats, and other structures developed using Ad
  370. Hoc and intended to perform a data entry, retrieval, or display function
  371. using Ad Hoc software.

  373. License Terms Applicable to All Use or Distribution

  376. The Ad Hoc program and all associated software and documentation are
  377. copyrighted products of Lyle Groome, dba ExLogica, and are protected by
  378. United States copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  379.  
  380. All rights not expressly granted here are reserved to ExLogica.  The use
  381. or distribution of these products is expressly prohibited, except as
  382. authorized by the terms of this agreement.
  383.  
  384. You may not modify or patch the Ad Hoc executable files in any way.  You
  385. may not decompile, disassemble, or otherwise reverse engineer the
  386. software in this product.  You may not sell or otherwise distribute Ad
  387. Hoc, enhancements to Ad Hoc, or Ad Hoc data dictionary or database
  388. files, or designs for such files, to anyone, except as provided in this
  389. agreement.

  391. You are specifically prohibited from charging, or requesting donations,
  392. for any copies of Ad Hoc, however made; and from distributing the
  393. software and/or documentation with other products or services
  394. (commercial or otherwise), except as provided for in this agreement and
  395. in the VENDINFO data record attached to this file as reference.

  397. License Terms Applicable to the Use of the Evaluation Version

  400. By installing and using this software, you agree to the following
  401. license agreement between yourself and ExLogica.  You should carefully

  405. You are authorized to use the evaluation (shareware) version of Ad Hoc
  406. for a period of 60 days.  If you use the program after the 60-day
  407. evaluation period, you are required to register your copy and pay the
  408. registration fee for a license to use the software.  Your use of the
  409. product, during and after the evaluation period is governed by the terms
  410. of this agreement.

  412. You may:
  413.  
  414.   Use the Shareware version of the software during the evaluation period.
  415.  
  416.   Make copies of the Shareware version of this software and documentation
  417.   for your own use.
  418.  
  419.   Give exact copies of the Shareware Distribution Package to other
  420.   individuals for their evaluation and use subject to the terms of this
  421.   agreement.
  422.  
  423. You may not use Ad Hoc after the evaluation period without first
  424. registering your copy and paying the license fee.  Unregistered use of Ad
  425. Hoc after the evaluation period, by any person, business, corporation,
  426. government agency, or any other entity, is strictly prohibited.
  427.  
  428. License Terms Applicable to Application Developers
  429. --------------------------------------------------
  430.  
  431. You may not use the evaluation version of Ad Hoc to create Ad Hoc
  432. Applications for others.  If you intend to develop applications for
  433. another party, you must first register your own version of Ad Hoc.  You
  434. may then create applications for other registered users of Ad Hoc,
  435. subject to the terms of the Software License Agreement for the registered
  436. version of Ad Hoc.
  437.  
  438. Licensing Terms Applicable to Distribution of Ad Hoc
  439. ----------------------------------------------------
  440.  
  441. Permission is granted to individuals charging no fees, and to BBSes,
  442. User Groups, Mail-Order Disk Vendors, CD-ROM publishers, and BBS
  443. File-Distribution Networks, to distribute the Ad Hoc
  444. Shareware Distribution Package, provided they convey a complete and
  445. unaltered copy of the Shareware Distribution Package, provided
  446. they claim no ownership of these products, and provided they meet the
  447. further requirements set forth below.
  448.  
  449. Distribution by other channels is also allowed, but only under the
  450. terms of the attached VENDINFO data record, which is hereby incorporated
  451. by reference.  Any distribution satisfying all the distribution
  452. requirements expressed in that data record is hereby authorized, and
  453. where there is a conflict between the VENDINFO record and this
  454. written agreement, the VENDINFO record shall prevail.
  455.  
  456. Permission to distribute these products is not transferable, assignable,
  457. saleable, or franchisable.  Each vendor wishing to distribute these
  458. products must independently satisfy the terms of this limited
  459. distribution license.
  460.  
  461. ExLogica may revoke any permissions granted here or in the VENDINFO
  462. record, by notifying you in writing.
  463.  
  464. Distribution of an incomplete Shareware Distribution Package,
  465. modification of the files in this package in any way, or including
  466. additional files is also forbidden without written permission from
  467. ExLogica.
  468.  
  469. No vendor, computer club, consultant, or other organization may
  470. distribute an Ad Hoc Application with, or for use with, the evaluation
  471. version of Ad Hoc without written permission from ExLogica.
  472.  
  473. Shareware distributors that satisfy all conditions for distributing Ad
  474. Hoc are authorized to use the unaltered product descriptions in this
  475. file (including the attached VENDINFO record) without further permission.
  476.  
  477. Except as designated in the attached VENDINFO record, the following
  478. fee restrictions apply to the distribution of the Ad Hoc Shareware
  479. Distribution Package:
  480.  
  481. No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested for distributing
  482. copies of Ad Hoc, except:
  483.  
  484.   Operators of electronic bulletin board systems may not charge fees
  485.   in excess of ten dollars specifically for downloading Ad Hoc.
  486.   Time-dependent charges for use of the bulletin board are
  487.   permissible.
  488.  
  489.   Vendors and user groups may charge a disk duplication and handling
  490.   fee which, when pro-rated to the Ad Hoc product, may not exceed ten
  491.   dollars, or five dollars per disk, whichever is larger.
  492.  
  493. Copies of Ad Hoc may not be rented or leased to others.
  494.  
  495. Operators of electronic bulletin boards or other information services
  496. must agree to remove Ad Hoc from their download libraries within one (1)
  497. day of a request from ExLogica.
  498.  
  499. ExLogica reserves the right to terminate a distribution license agreement
  500. with any vendor.  A vendor must remove Ad Hoc from its distribution as
  501. soon as possible (but not to exceed sixty (60) days) after such request
  502. from ExLogica.
  503.  
  504. Ad Hoc may not be sold as part of another application or application
  505. package, including any commercial software offer, without a written
  506. agreement with ExLogica.
  507.  
  508. Vendors who wish to distribute the Ad Hoc Shareware Distribution Package
  509. as part of a collection must obtain permission from ExLogica prior to
  510. beginning such a distribution.  Vendors that qualify under the
  511. conditions set forth in the attached VENDINFO record do not need
  512. written permission.
  513.  
  514. Before adding Ad Hoc to a CD-ROM or other collection, please check the
  515. release date of the version you have.  If the version is over six (6)
  516. months old, please contact us to ensure that you have the most current
  517. version.  You may not start a new distribution of outdated versions of
  518. Ad Hoc without written permission from ExLogica.
  519.  
  520. Before distributing Ad Hoc on a "disk-of-the-month" club or similar type
