===== Installation =====================================
Ad Hoc is a Windows program. It requires Microsoft Windows version 3.1
and requires about 4MB of disk space. If you are installing Ad Hoc over
a previous version, read the section "Installing over a previous
version".
Installing from the ADHOC.ZIP distribution file
-----------------------------------------------
If you have downloaded Ad Hoc from an information service or bulletin
board, or received if from some other form of shareware distribution, it
will be in a .ZIP file or some other compressed file format. The files
in the Ad Hoc distribution set are listed in the section above labeled
"Packing List". If any of the files in the set are missing, you may not
be able to properly install Ad Hoc.
Once you have unzipped the distribution file, you must run the INSTALL
program that is part of the distribution file set. This is a Windows
program, so you must run it using the File|Run command of the Program
Manager (or the File Manager).
You may install Ad Hoc in the directory containing the unzipped files,
or in a different directory. We recommend that you install Ad Hoc in
its own directory: C:\ADHOC.
The install program will create the installation directory you designate
if it doesn't already exist. It will also create a subdirectory called
SAMPLE in this directory and copy the sample data files to it. You can
also request that the install program create a Program Manager group for
Ad Hoc.
NOTE: If you install Ad Hoc in the same directory to which you unzipped
the distribution files, The file named ADHOC.EX_ is changed to
ADHOC.EXE. This is an indication to the install program that Ad Hoc has
already been installed, and it will not install again. If you install
to a different directory, you can run the install program again.
NOTE: The install program will automatically create a new installation
directory, but its parent directory must already exist. For example if
you designate the install directory as C:\ADHOC, that's OK. If you
designate C:\EVAL\ADHOC, C:\EVAL must already exists, otherwise you will
get an error message.
Installing from Diskettes
-------------------------
The evaluation version of Ad Hoc is also supplied on a 2-disk
installation set. If you are installing Ad Hoc from these installation
diskettes, insert Disk 1 into drive A: or B: and from the Program
Manager or the File Manager, select the Run command on the File menu and
enter A:SETUP (or B:SETUP).
The setup program will ask you for the directory on your hard disk that
Ad Hoc will be installed into. The default program directory name
suggested is C:\ADHOC, but you can change it if necessary. The setup
program will install Ad Hoc and all of its support files into this
directory, and sample data files in a subdirectory called SAMPLE.
Changes Ad Hoc installation makes to your system configuration
--------------------------------------------------------------
Ad Hoc installation makes the following changes to your system
configuration files, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI:
WIN.INI
Adds the line following line to the [Extensions] section:
DDF=D:\ADHOC\ADHOC.EXE ^.DDF
SYSTEM.INI
Adds the following lines to the [386Enh] section, if not already there:
device=VSHARE.386
UniqueDOSPSP=true
If the install program makes any changes to you system.ini file, it will
first makes a backup of your original file. The install program will
also place a copy of the files CTL3DV2.DLL and VSHARE.386 into the
windows system directory, if they are not already there.
Starting Ad Hoc
---------------
To start Ad Hoc click on its icon in the Program Manager, or from the
Program Manager or File Manager, select the Run command on the File
menu and enter the command
c:\adhoc\adhoc
Installing over a previous version
----------------------------------
You should install Ad Hoc 1.2 in the same directory as a previous
version. The new files will overwrite the old files, but if you want to
insure a clean installation, delete the old ADHOC directory first. Ad
Hoc 1.2 is compatible with databases developed with earlier versions.
However, version 1.2 stores report, form, and list designs in a
different format than older versions. Once you have begun using Ad Hoc
version 1.2 with a particular database, you may experience errors if you
revert to an older version.
If You Don't Run Windows in the 386 (Enhanced) Mode
---------------------------------------------------
If you will be running Ad Hoc in a Windows mode other than the Enhanced
(386) mode, you must install the DOS SHARE driver to enable the Ad Hoc
record locking feature. If you will be running in 386 mode (the normal
mode for 386 processors and above), you do not have to install SHARE.
The SHARE.EXE driver must be installed before you run Windows (do not do
it from a DOS window running under Windows). To load share, at the DOS
prompt, enter SHARE. SHARE.EXE is located in your DOS directory. Then
start Windows. For convenience, put the SHARE command in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (If you start Windows in your AUTOEXEC, make sure the
SHARE command is first.)
Optional
--------
Ad Hoc uses several DLLs that may already be installed on your disk for
other programs. To save disk space, you can move these DLLs to your
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for use by all programs. Any DLLs that you
copy to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory can be deleted from the ADHOC
directory. These DLLs are:
BC450RTL.DLL Runtime C++ library
OWL100.DLL Runtime library - Borland ObjectWindows
TCLASS45.DLL Runtime class library
BWCC.DLL Borland Windows Custom Control library
WBTRCALL.DLL Btrieve record manager from Novell
DB.DLL and AHUTIL.DLL are Ad Hoc private libraries; there is no need to
move them from the Ad Hoc directory
IMPORTANT: If you have several copies of a particular DLL on your disk,
make sure that you put the latest copy (by file date)in the
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory before you delete the other copies.
