Upgrading from Previous Releases
================================
If you are upgrading to Release 2.1.1 from a previous
version of NetShield, please follow these recommendations.
1. Backup your existing NetShield installation. For example:
copy <existing directory>\netshld.nlm <backup directory name>
copy <existing directory>\*.dat <backup directory name>
2. Validate the program and data files. See VALIDATE.TXT and
PACKING.LST for details.
3. Copy the new files into the SYS:\SYSTEM directory of your
file server.
4. If you choose to copy NetShield to a directory other than
SYS:\SYSTEM, you MUST add this new directory to the server's
search path. For example, if you create a new directory called
SYS:\SYSTEM\NETSHLD, copy your files there and then type:
search add sys:\system\netshld

New Features in NetShield
=========================
PAGER NOTIFICATION
------------------
NetShield will now notify a user or set of users whenever a
virus is detected via a numeric phone pager. This allows
the system administrator to be confident that (s)he will
know immediately if a virus is found.
This feature requires a Hayes(r) compatible modem connected
to each server running NetShield.
MHS NOTIFICATION
----------------
NetShield will now notify a user or set of users whenever
a virus is detected via MHS mail. This allows
the system administrator to be confident that (s)he will
know immediately if a virus is found.
This feature requires a Novel Basic or Global MHS server
on the network.
Changes in This Release
=======================
When using NetLock Security, renames within any directory
monitored by NetLock will be denied.
Bugs Fixed in This Release
==========================
Using On Access scanning with several applications,
notably the Microsoft Office suite, would cause file
saves to fail. This problem has been fixed.
User Broadcast Messages were not sent if a virus was found
during an On Access scan. This has been fixed.
If periodic scan settings were changed while active,
NetShield would allow incomplete settings to be entered.
This has been fixed.
When the detected action is set to Move, if the destination
directory does not exist, the Move to option was de-selected.
This has been fixed. The new directory is now created.
The CPU utilization number in the "F-10" statistics screen
displayed incorrect numbers. This has been fixed.
Issues in This Release
======================
Required NetWare Patches
------------------------
NetShield requires the following Netware Patch files for
Netware 3.11 and 3.12 (these files are NOT required for
NetWare 4.x):
-----------
A3112.NLM - NetWare 3.x NUT Compatibility Support v4.01a
AFTER311.NLM - NetWare 3.x locale Compatibility Support v4.01a
CLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Library v3.12h
NWSNUT.NLM - NetWare NLM Utility User Interface v4.11
MATHLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (387 support) v3.12h
-- or --
MATHLIBC.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (fp calls) v3.12h
NetShield requires the following Netware Patch files for Netware 4.01:
-----------
CLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Library 4.10
MATHLIB.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (387 support) v4.10
-- or --
MATHLIBC.NLM - NetWare C NLM Runtime Math Library (fp calls) v4.10
CONFIGURING GLOBAL MHS
----------------------
In order for NetShield 2.1 to operate with Global MHS,
add the following entry to the NGM.CFG file for the MHS
server:
[MGMSMF]
sender-validation-enabled=FALSE
COEXISTING WITH SITEMETER
-------------------------
If you wish to run SiteMeter in conjunction with NetShield,
be sure to load SiteMeter before NetShield. SiteMeter requires
MATHLIBC.NLM. NetShield expects MATHLIB.NLM, but will load
and run properly with MATHLIBC.NLM. If MATHLIBC.NLM is already
loaded when you load NetShield, you will see the following
message from NetWare:
Public variables exported by this auto loaded NLM already defined.
Module MATHLIB.NLM NOT loaded.
NetShield will be unaffected.
Known Bugs in This Release
==========================
Loading NetShield from a directory other than SYS:\SYSTEM
without adding the directory to the path will abend the
server. Example:
search add SYS:\SYSTEM\NETSHLD
NetShield will not load if the files NAMES.DAT and/or SCAN.DAT
are read only. If necessary, use the DOS command ATTRIB to
remedy the problem. Example:
attrib -r names.dat
attrib -r scan.dat
