ICARO.EXE and inoculation programs
ICARO has its own CRC control to detect virus infections in ICARO.EXE; you MUST NOT use any inoculation program with this file, because these programs usually alter the EXE file, changing its CRC and thus triggering ICARO.EXE's 'virus alert'.
Note: Registered version only.

Additional programs needed
You'll need at least one of the file compression programs supported by ICARO. These include PKZIP, PAK, ARJ, LZH/LHA, PKPAK, RAR and ZOO. If you are installing the PKZIP package, please make sure to install the following three programs: PKZIP.EXE, PKUNZIP.EXE, and ZIP2EXE.EXE. All the programs mentioned can found on most Bulletin Boards.
ICARO, unlike other shells, automatically attempts to handle compressed files without looking at file extension; this way, SDN files will be correctly processed as PAK/ARJ files, because ICARO will recognize their compression scheme.
Background printing
When you install the resident part of PRINT.COM, ICARO uses it to redirect printing files; this way you can use background to print and, with SETUP
Print_Manager, see the queue and modify it deleting printing files. If PRINT.COM is active, the PRINT button is replaced by SPOOL and SETUP
Print_Queue is enabled, otherwise both are deactivated and you cannot perform background printing. Compressed files to print are extracted to a temporary directory named PRINT## and you can set the path using SETUP
Directories; they are NOT deleted when printed, but SETUP
Print_Queue compares the queue with the files in the directory and deletes the ones that are not in the queue. v
Note: It would not be advisable to use the same drive of ICARO temporary directory especially when it's a RAM DRIVE.
The TREEINFO.x files
Icaro provides a graphical directory tree for navigation and directory manipulation.
Icaro will scan the current drive the first time the tree needs to be displayed only; the tree information are stored in a file placed in the directory specified in the ICARO.INI file. w
All the following calls to access the tree result in a reading of the TREEINFO file instead of re-scanning the drive. m
The file names that Icaro places in the target directory are TREEINFO.x, where `x' is the drive designator.
One important item must be kept in mind: Icaro has no knowledge of any directories created, renamed, or removed outside of Icaro. You can accomplish these operations while in the program. If you add a new directory using an external program then hark back Icaro, the new directory will not appear on the tree. In this case you have to manually re-scan the disk using the Scan command while the Tree
Pane (or Directory item in the File
Pane) is focused.
Directories that are created when copying, moving or removing directory trees are automatically updated, while directories created decompressing files are NOT automatically recognized.
ICARO provides special CD-ROM drives support. When a CD-ROM is accessed the first time, ICARO scans the media to build the directory tree; these data are stored in a file with name ``TREE_CD'' and extension``.001'', ``.002'' and so on.
For example, if you access a CD-ROM drive ``I'' the treeinfo file name of the first media will be ``TREE_CD.001'' and the ``TREEINFO.I'' file will be updated with the a index to the new list.
Starting Icaro
ICARO can be started from the DOS command line by typing ICARO and pressing the Enter key. There may be valid DOS path names and there may be valid DOS file names.

Environment
This chapter explains the basic concepts you need in order to work with ICARO; if you are familiar with graphical environments such as Microsoft Windows (TM), you can skip this section.
Now we assume you are using a mouse, so the left button is the primary button and when you want to perform an action, you must press it. The right button is used to tag the files only.
The desktop is quite different from the Windows' one; this is mono-task and you must shell to DOS to execute any external program. _

Enabled when you use manual insertion (case B), allows Icaro to add all the DOS files matching the wildcard in the directory and its subdirectories.
i.e.: C:\*.DOC C:\*.TXT
Will add all files with DOC and TXT extensions located in the root of C:\ and ALL subdirectories.
Save path information
Icaro will add the full pathname description to newly archived files.
Move files
Icaro will delete files once they are updated.
Authenticity mode
Read archives docs.
Password protection
When the Password protection option is enabled Icaro encrypts the archive with a password. ARJ, RAR and ZIP provide password protected compressed files. Before creating the archive you will be prompted for a password. That password is used decompressing files also, so if the archive password is different you have to open Setup
System
Archive
Password command and type in the correct entry. The password is NOT saved in the ICARO.INI files.
Volume label
Volume label allows the user to add the DOS volume label to the archive.
Multi Volume
Enable or disable Multi-Volume (ARJ-RAR-ZIP only) archives.
Update TimeStamp
The Update Time Stamp function resets the time stamp of the archive file according to the newest file in the archive. Packers normally attempt to maintain the timestamp of an archive to reflect the age of the newest file stored in it; sometimes it should be incorrect and this can be fixed with this switch.

Nested Archives
You cannot modify nested Archives; available commands are: VIEW, EXTRACT, TEST, SCAN.

Files
When you usually launch documents you want to launch them with the application that created them or with a viewer to watch them. That is, you will launch a document that is associated to a particular application. ICARO uses filename extensions to associate files with their applications. ICARO will invoke the viewer, allowing you to view the file on the screen (or listen it with any sound card if it is a music file) or will execute any .COM or .EXE file or external viewer. Remember that some programs require accessory files to be present in order to work properly.

The Launch List provides an easy way to launch up to 15 applications that have been included in the Launch List, that looks very similar to the Windows' (TM) Task List. But the difference is important, because the Task List includes only those applications that are currently running and, more important, ICARO is not a Multitasking environment (even if you can add Windows to the Launch List!). If the Launch List does not appear on your video, probably you have included no applications in it: check the [Launch List] group in the ICARO.INI file!

With the RUN DOS Command you can execute every DOS command you want; when the input line is empty, DOS SHELL is executed.
The character '#' is instead of the highlighted file in the list-box, while the '%' denote all current tagged files (for example, 'EDIT #' or UNDELETE %') in the active window.
The history list displays your last entries; this is extremely helpful when you execute the same command or you change it a bit only.
Launching Compressed Files
If the target file is archived into a compressed file, ICARO will temporarily unpack it to the temporary directory before invoking the viewer and will erase it when you return to ICARO or close the internal Viewer or Player (MOD-VOC-WAV-FLI).
Locking and UnLocking Drive Windows
Using shells and file managers you are accustomed to use two windows almost always; this it the only available configurations with programs as SHEZ, Arc Master, Norton Commander and its clones.
Windows File Manager and Norton Desktop allow more than two file windows and you can move, tile or cascade all the windows in the File Manager or on the Norton Desktop.
Icaro takes a step forward: you can configure the Desktop disposing Drive, Tool Icons and Drive Windows as you prefer then save the Desktop image. |
More, you can lock the Drive Windows that is, you shall not be able to move them till you will not use the UnLock command.
Why lock Drive Windows? Well, locking windows you can open more Drive, Archive or Text Windows, tile or move them but the locked ones will ignore these commands; and closing all the windows the locked ones will stay open.
As a consequence, the locked Drive Windows lose their shadows, so disposing two of them side by side you improve the look of the Desktop. !
A little suggestion: configure the desktop, enable the Load desktop on start switch, lock the windows then save the configuration (Configure
Save configuration). Every time you start Icaro, the program will load the desktop image including the locked/unlocked state of the Drive Windows.

You can set the compression factor and disable advanced feature of PkZip and PkunZip version 2.
The Temporary Directory
The Temporary Directory is an important configuration item; the entry here should be the full, valid DOS path name of an existing directory or drive in your system; ICARO will add a hidden temp directory called MV## and will use this directory for various purposes. For example, ICARO will pass that path name to ARJ/LHA/PKZIP so that ARJ/LHA/ZIP can place their temporary files there (this feature can be disabled).
ICARO also uses the temporary directory for temporary file storage during archive system conversion and VirusSCAN operations.

The system crashes when I load Icaro
If your system crashes immediately after the audio logo, the problem can be ascribed to the audio engine. 7
Disable the audio support editing the ICARO.INI file: @
[System]
AudioSupport=FALSE
[Sound Card]
Card=None
Save the modified ICARO.INI file then launch the program again; if Icaro works the problem is certainly in the audio library. If Icaro crashes with the audio support disabled, Icaro itself is the problem.
Compile the BUGSHEET.DOC module and send it to me (I will send it to the author of the sound library if it is a sound
card problem).
The autodetect (Card=Auto) crashed the system very often, but works fine with my Sound Blaster 16 card; try, one at a time, the available cards and insert the correct DMA, IRQ and BaseIO (autodetect makes this for you).
Example:
[Sound Card]
Card=Sound Blaster 16
IRQ=5
DMA8=1
DMA16=5
BaseIO=$220
The system crashes after I run video test
You must manually add the extended video modes your video card supports; edit the [Extended Video Modes] group in the ICARO.INI file. a
Use VIDTEST.EXE to individuate the section that crashes the system and report to me the result. *
These are my ET4000 video card settings:
[Extended Video Modes]
#0= 2h 80x25 16p b/w
#1= 3h 80x25 16p color
#2= 7h 80x25 16p mono
#3= 21h 132x60 8p color
#4= 22h 132x44 9p color
#5= 23h 132x25 16p color
#6= 24h 132x28 14p color
#7= 26h 80x60 8p color
#8= 2Ah 100x40 15p color
The system crashes after I open a Drive Window
Probably the structure of your partition table is corrupted; use utilities like Chkdsk or Norton Disk Doctor to correct these errors and delete the TREEINFO file of that drive.
The Find procedure does not find all arcers,
even if the missing ones are in the path.
The Find Packers procedure searches for the supported arcers only. So SQZ and UC2 are not searched for. They will be supported with the next releases of Icaro.
I cannot manage archives
If you use my primary shell system (from among EMS, XMS and FILE at least one option is enabled), it is possible Icaro cannot be swapped out before executing the program; this can happens because there is no space for swapping. Try enabling the FILE switch (if disabled) or disabling ALL the switches (EMS/XMS/FILE); Icaro will use a more standard swap system (that reduces the available memory).
I Cannot Shell
It is possible your system is not compatible with my primary shell procedure. Try disabling XMS and EMS; Icaro will swap using a temporary file. If the problem occurs again, disable the FILE swap also; Icaro will use a more standard swap system (that reduces the available memory).
After a certain period the border of
any window on the desktop changes.
You enabled the ScreenSaver and the active one is not compatible with your system; try the other screen savers or disable this function at all.
Moving the mouse the screen gets dirty
Mouse drivers did not support screens like 132x60. You have to set EnableInternalMouse to TRUE.
The Tree Pane does not show directories correclty
The Tree Pane uses the TREEINFO.x file of that drive; with internal directory commands like COPY, MOVE, DELETE, RENAME the file is always updated. External programs can change the structure so you have to rescan that drive. Select the Tree Pane and execute the Scan command: the Tree Pane of the active Drive Window is updated. You can otherwise delete the TREEINFO.x file, close the Drive Window and re
open it: Icaro will automatically rescan the x drive.
