Frequent Asked Questions
───────────────────────────────────────────────
What is a Shell?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A shell is a program that provides an interface
between the operator (you) and the system;
removes the burden of remembering command line
switches and options used with archiving
programs and provides the same point and click
interface as Windows, allowing an easy access
to applications and data.
Why use Icaro?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The most important reasons for using Icaro can
be:
1 It is the most complete and easy to use
application to manage files, applications,
archives, CD ROMs.
2 Icaro is an integrated application and
provides many of your needs.
What is the ICARO.INI file?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ICARO.INI file contains information that
define the Desktop environment and settings
that applications uses or modify to customize
themselves.
Can I run multiple applications?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, when you run Icaro under OS/2!
Can I quickly maximize a window?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! Double─clicking the title bar the window
is maximized or restored to the size it was
before you maximized it.
Can I quickly launch data and the application
that created them?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! You can automatically launch data files
and the application that created them; you must
associate the filename extension to an
application (you must edit ICARO.INI) then
``View'' the file. That's all!
Why are some check boxes or radio buttons gray?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some settings require particular switches
enabled/disabled, or the selected function does
not support that switch; a gray option is not
accessible and you cannot change its state.
Troubleshooting
───────────────────────────────────────────────
The system crashes when I load Icaro.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your system crashes immediately after the
audio logo, the problem can be ascribed to the
audio engine.
Disable the audio support editing the ICARO.INI
file:
[System]
AudioSupport~FALSE
[Sound Card]
Card~None
Save the modified ICARO.INI file then launch
the program again; if Icaro works the problem
is certainly in the audio library. If Icaro
crashes with the audio support disabled, Icaro
itself is the problem.
Compile the BUGSHEET.DOC module and send it to
me (I will send it to the author of the sound
library if it is a sound─card problem).
The autodetect (Card~Auto) crashed the system
very often, but works fine with my Sound
Blaster 16 card; try, one at a time, the
available cards and insert the correct DMA, IRQ
and BaseIO (autodetect makes this for you).
Example:
[Sound Card]
Card~ Sound Blaster 16
IRQ~5
DMA8~1
DMA16~5
BaseIO~$220
The system crashes after I run video test.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You must manually add the extended video modes
your video card supperts; edit the [Extended
Video Modes] group in the ICARO.INI file.
Use VIDTEST.EXE to individuate the section that
crashes the system and report to me the result.
These are my ET4000 video card settings:
[Extended Video Modes]
#0= 2h 80x25 16p b/w
#1= 3h 80x25 16p color
#2= 7h 80x25 16p mono
#3= 21h 132x60 8p color
#4= 22h 132x44 9p color
#5= 23h 132x25 16p color
#6= 24h 132x28 14p color
#7= 26h 80x60 8p color
#8= 2Ah 100x40 15p color
The system crashes after I open a Drive Window.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Probably the structure of your partition table
is corrupted; use utilities like Norton Disk
Doctor to correct these errors and delete the
TREEINFO file of that drive.
The INSTALL procedure does not find all arcers,
even if the missing ones are in the path.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The INSTALL procedure searches for the
supported arcers only. So SQZ and UC2 are not
searched for. They will be supported with the
next releases of Icaro.
I cannot shell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is possible your system is not compatible
with my primary shell procedure. Try disabling
XMS and EMS; Icaro will swap using a temporary
file. If the problem occurs again, disable the
FILE swap also; Icaro will use a more standard
swap system (that reduces the available
memory).
After a certain period the border of any window
on the desktop changes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You enabled the ScreenSaver and the active one
is not compatible with your system; try the
other screen savers or disable this function at
all.
Moving the mouse the screen gets dirty.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mouse drivers did not support screens like
132x60. You have to set EnableInternalMouse to
TRUE and start Icaro again.
The Tree Pane does not show a directory I am
sure exists.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Tree Pane uses the TREEINFO.x file of that
drive; with internal directory commands like
COPY, MOVE, DELETE, RENAME the file is always
updated. External programs can change the
structure so you have to rescan that drive.
Select the Tree Pane and execute the Scan
command: the Tree Pane of the active Drive
Window is updated.
You can otherwise delete the TREEINFO.x file,
close the Drive Window and re─open it: Icaro
will automatically rescan the x drive.
