  35.     WHAT IS agSI?
  36.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  37.     agSI is a system information tool running under DOS which gives dozens
  38.     of items of information about hardware/system, operating system, memory,
  39.     software, and drives, for example
  40.      - processor (incl. Pentium specific things), BIOS, BIOS extensions,
  41.        CMOS RAM, interrupt vectors
  42.      - interfaces, graphics and sound cards, IRQ assignments
  43.      - operating system version, system file tables, country settings,
  44.        Windows modules (e.g. VxDs)
  45.      - DOS memory usage, EMS,XMS,DPMI etc.
  46.      - mouse driver, many installed resident programs and operating system
  47.        services and extensions
  48.      - logical drives (A: to Z:) with many details, including directory
  49.        tree, table of contents for CDs
  50.      - connected hard disks, including benchmark
  51.      - disk cache and online compressor
  52.      - optional continuous updating of the information in the current window
  53.        (where sensible)
  54.      - also offers formatting floppy disks - with higher capacity
  55.      - option to print to COM1-4, LPT1-3, or a file
  56.      - runs of course under several operating systems and versions, like
  57.        MS-DOS, Novell DOS, PTS-DOS, a DOS session under Windows or
  58.        OS/2 since version 2.

  60.     I must admit that many of what agSI shows will be of no interest to
  61.     average users, but useful for users with interest in internal stuff.

  64.     IMPORTANT NOTES, CONDITIONS OF USE

  66.     The faultless working of agSI can, especially because several
  67.     undocumented things are used, not be guaranteed, for there are many
  68.     different system configurations possible.
  69.     Should agSI crash on your system, try to localize the reason for
  70.     the error, and notify my about it, for I cannot adapt agSI if you
  71.     don't.

  88.     SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  91.      - an "IBM-compatible" computer with 80286 processor or better
  92.      - MS-DOS from version 3.3 or so, or compatible
  93.      - ca. 500 kB free DOS memory
  94.      - runs also from floppy disk (but slow due to overlay use)

  96.     Recommended:
  97.      - 80386 processor or better
  98.      - Mouse
  99.      - sufficient XMS memory and/or cache to load the overlay part of
  100.        the program
  101.      - on hard disk, ca. 650-750k are needed

  104.     SHAREWARE
  105.     ~~~~~~~~~
  106.     agSI is distributed as SHAREWARE, i.e. you have to keep to the
  107.     following rules:
  108.  
  109.     You may:
  110.      - give the shareware version to anybody (taking only a fee for
  111.        handling); this has to be done completely and unmodified
  112.        (recommendedly the original ZIP archive files)
  113.      - upload it to any BBS or software server, or put it on a CD-ROM
  114.        (here also: completely); if the latter, it would be kind of you
  115.        to inform me so I can keep track about how far agSI is spreading
  116.      - use (test) it for a period of 21 days; if you want to use agSI
  117.        after this period, you must register with the author, paying a
  118.        small amount of money.

  120.     You may NOT:
  121.      - use the shareware version beyond the above test period.
  122.      - pass the full version, i.e. a registration code, to anyone, any way
  123.      - use a single license on more than one computers, unless you make
  124.        sure that only one at a time can be used.

  126.     agSI is no "crippleware", i.e. there are no limitations to the
  127.     shareware version; you are just being reminded about that by a window
  128.     at startup and a blinking title line.

  133.     PACKAGE CONTENTS AND INSTALLATION
  134.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  135.     agSI is distributed in ZIP archives, with the name AGSIxxxD.ZIP for
  136.     the German and AGSIxxxE.ZIP for the English version; xxx means the
  137.     version number. (Exception: you ordered agSI on a diskette from me.)

  139.     As you are reading this file, you already have the files in an
  140.     unpacked state; you should have the following files:
  141.  
  142.         AGSI.EXE     - the program file
  143.         AGSI.OVR     - overlay program file
  144.         AGSI.HLP     - file for the online help
  145.         README.TXT   - this file
  146.         ORDERFRM.TXT - order form for registration
  147.         FDREAD.EXE   - TSR to allow DOS to read high-capacity floppies
  148.                        (taken from the FDFORMAT 1.8 package by C.H.
  149.                         Hochstätter, available as FDF18.ZIP from, e.g.,
  150.                         SimTel in msdos/diskutil)

  152.     (The first two files are needed for agSI to run; strongly recommended
  153.     is the help file.)

  155.     You may place the files in a directory of your choice (but all in
  156.     the same); during execution, the file AGSI.INI will be created which
  157.     contains several settings; including the registration code - so don't
  158.     pass it to someone else (without editing)!

  161.     START FROM THE COMMAND LINE
  162.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  163.     The command line of agSI has the following syntax:

  165.       [d:\path]AGSI[.EXE] {[/|-]Option}

  167.     with:
  168.       d:\path   is where agSI is located
  169.       Option    is one of the followin options (optionally with a
  170.                 preceding slash (/) or dash (-)):
  171.  
  172.                 ?   and
  173.                 H   shows a brief help text
  174.  
  175.                 I   disables usage of bright background colors
  176.  
  177.                 U   disables continuous updating of the info windows
  178.  
  179.                 D   runs agSI in debug mode: the amount of free heap
  180.                     memory is displayed in the lower right corner

  182.     The options I and U may also be set in the Options dialog in the main
  183.     menu; these and other settings are stored in the AGSI.INI file,
  184.     further information about which you may find in the online help.

  187.     USING THE PROGRAM
  188.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  189.     agSI presents itself in a, as I think, nice look in DOS text mode
  190.     (with mouse support). On the left side is the menu, from which you
  191.     may select items the usual way; sub-menus are shown with a little
  192.     triangle to the right. If a menu item is to show an information page,
  193.     there are different options:
  194.     Press the Space key to open the info window, but leave the (main)
  195.     keyboard control at the menu;
  196.     press Tab to open the info window AND activate it;
  197.     for the Enter key, you may select which of the above functions
  198.     (default: like Space) it should do in the Options dialog (in the main
  199.     menu).
  200.     Pressing Esc brings you back one menu level.
  201.     This all works of course also with the mouse; simply click. (There
  202.     is no need to explicitly activate the info window when using the mouse,
  203.     of course.)
  204.  
  205.     The Info Window:
  206.     Depending on the type of the displayed information, you may scroll
  207.     the contents of the info window just up/down, or you may highlight
  208.     each line seperately; for this you may use the cursor keys (including
  209.     PgUp/PgDn, Home/End, etc.), but the up/down and home/end keys only when
  210.     the window is active (see above), as they are used for the menu
  211.     otherwise.
  212.     Of course you may use the mouse here, too.
  213.     For the lines in the info window that are marked with a triangle to
  214.     the right you may get more, detailed information by pressing Enter (if
  215.     the window is active) or Ctrl-Enter (mouse: double click).

  217.     With the key combination Alt-X you can leave agSI at any time.
  218.     (Exception: inside the help system; when a dialog is active; if a
  219.      sub-info-window is active.)
  220.  
  221.     The following actions may be performed with the mouse by clicking the
  222.     status line (the bottom-most line), or by pressing the corresponding
  223.     key:
  224.  
  225.     F1 - Help:   With this you get a help page for the current context.
  226.  
  227.                  If the highlighted menu item is the same that is displayed
  228.                  in the info window, you get a help page (or a certain
  229.                  position inside a help page) for the currently-highlighted
  230.                  line of the info window; otherwise, you get a page for the
  231.                  menu item.

  233.     F2 - Print:  This opens a dialog window in which you may choose what
  234.                  to print to where with which options and highlighting.
  235.  
  236.     F7 - previous page:  jumps to the previous information page
  237.                  (considering the order of the menu).
  238.  
  239.     F8 - next page:  jumps to the next page.
  240.  
  241.     Alt-U - Update:  This key performs two actions: first, the current
  242.                  info window will be updated immediately; second, any
  243.                  further automatical countinuous updating of this window
  244.                  will be suppressed (until you select a new window).

  246.                  Continuous updating may be controlled globally in the
  247.                  Options dialog.
  248.  
  249.     Also, the status line sometimes displays some short hints.

  252.     IN THE HELP SYSTEM you may get help about using the help system by
  253.     pressing F1 a second time, review the previous topic with Alt-F1,
  254.     get to the alphabetical index with Shift-F1, and close the help window
  255.     with Esc.

  257.     To jump to a cross reference, first highlight the desired cross
  258.     reference using the cursor keys (the help window will be scrolled if
  259.     necessary), or a single click with the mouse. To jump to the connected
  260.     topic, press Space or Enter, or click again.

  268.     ATTENTION: Like in any "proper" program, there is something hidden
  269.                to be discovered in agSI...

  273.     KNOWN BUGS
  274.     ~~~~~~~~~~
  275.     - (generally:) Some items may cause 6agSI to hang up or crash the
  276.       system under certain conditions.
  277.     - On a beta tester's system, when selecting Media Information for a
  278.       floppy disk drive, agSI crashed with an Invalid Opcode exception
  279.       under Novell DOS (but not on my system).
  280.     - Under OS/2, the Speed info list (menu Hardware/System) sometimes
  281.       led to a run-time error 200 or 207.
  282.     - agSI crashed under some conditions under the Russian PTS-DOS.
  283.     - The colour of some highlightings of the help system may look bad
  284.       in monochrome modes.

  287.     REGISTRATION
  288.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  289.     As you know, agSI is distributed as shareware. The registration fee
  290.     is US-$ 15 or DM 20 for a single license; you will then recieve a
  291.     registration code (which consists of eight letters) which you enter
  292.     along with your name in the Register dialog (in the main menu).
  293.     Normally, no disks will be sent; but if you want it that way, that's
  294.     possible, of course (price: US-$ 4 / DM 5 per disk).
  295.     As payment you may either mail me a cheque (or cash), or you order -
  296.     inside of Germany only! - by C.O.D., which adds a DM 5 fee.
  297.     You may also let me inform you about new "major" upgrades (by letter
  298.     or - preferably - e-mail accessible from the Internet).

  317.     Anyway, if you encounter any problem with agSI - as it is partially
  318.     programmed very close to the hardware, this is pretty likely (I can't
  319.     test hundreds of systems and configurations - or anything you don't
  320.     like, tell me; only this way agSI can be more and more improved.
  321.     If too much in agSI doesn't work on your system, you may even postpone
  322.     registration if you think it's not worth the money now.
