EZDiary is a small, easy to use, quick, and
RELIABLE diary program. I wrote it because I lost
data in other programs. I did sacrifice storage
space for reliability and speed, but think that
this is the best way to go. I also did not want to
be stuck using this or any other program, because a
program that I like better might come along, so I
programmed it to be flexible enough to let a user
convert this diary type to another.
Requirements:
EZDIARY requires a computer to have at least a VGA
card and a color monitor.
Installing EZDIARY:
Put the uncompressed files in a new directory and
run the install program. This will only create a
HELP subdirectory in the current directory and move
the .hlp files there. It will then delete the
install program. EZDIARY can be run as a stand
alone file if on-line help is not desired.
Creating a new diary:
A new diary can be created either at the startup
screen or by selecting DIARY under file. Either
way the procedure is the same. After selecting this
choice, the user will be asked to name the diary.
This must be no greater than 8 characters and not
contain an extension. This is because .cat is
appended to the given name and this is the filename
under which the diary is saved. Then the user will
be asked for a password. Any password will do, but
remember that the program will even check for
capital letters. If your not concerned about
protection, then just hit the enter key, so that
you do not have to worry about forgetting your
password. The user will then be prompted for a
description of the diary. This is only for your own
information. You can view this information anytime
by selecting the DIARY INFO option under the EDIT
menu. SAMPLE.CAT is provided for a sample diary;
press enter for its password. It can be deleted
after installation. Diary data files will always
be saved into the same directory as the EZDIARY
executable program. This can not be changed.
Creating entries in the diary:
A new entry can be created by selecting the ENTRY
option under the FILE menu. The user will be asked
for a date that corresponds to each diary entry.
Just hitting enter will select the current default
date listed in the menu. The user will then be
asked for a heading, which will also be appended
to its entry. The heading must be restricted to 18
characters (just keep it within the window). Date
and heading information is important for 2 reasons.
First, when you want to open an entry for reading
or editing, you will select it based on its date
and/or heading. Second, any keyword searches will
look at the header for matches. It is important to
remember to hit the ESCAPE key when you are finished
entering an entry. This gets the program out of edit
mode and reactivates the menu system. Also, there
is no auto-save function when you exit the program
so make sure you save each entry before exiting.
The screen will tell you if the current entry is
saved.
Saving a diary entry:
All entries must be explicitly saved. Highlight
and select the SAVE option under the FILE menu.
For a new entry the entry is saved with the date
and heading that the user just gave it. For a
previously saved entry opened with the open command,
the program will open a window that contains the
entry's old date and header. You can keep them by
pressing ENTER or change them. Then you will be
asked if you want to save it as a new entry or
overwrite the old entry. If you save an entry twice
in a row, it will not overwrite itself. All entries
are saved in encrypted form to protect against
anyone trying to read the diary out of the program.
Reading or editing entries:
Any entry can be opened by selecting the OPEN
option under the FILE menu. A window with a list of
the dates and headings of all the entries within the
active diary will appear and the user can highlight
and select any one of them. If you just want to read
the entry do not save it when exiting edit mode
(ESCAPE key). If you want to edit it then remember
to save it when you exit edit mode. If you are
writing an entry and hit escape to get out of edit
mode you must save the entry and reopen it to
further edit it.
Deleting entries:
Any entry within the active diary can be deleted by
selecting the DELETE option under the EDIT menu. A
window with a list of all the entry's dates and
headers will appear. ANy one highlighted and
selected will be deleted.
Changing and transfering diaries:
Any diary can be made active by selected it from
either the startup window or by selecting the DIARY
option under the EDIT menu. This latter method can be
used to transfer entries from one diary to another.
First open the entry to be transfered. Then open
the diary to transfer the entry to. Right away
select the SAVE option. The old entry is still
active and so will be saved in the new diary. You
can not open any diary without knowing its password.
Seaching text:
Selecting the SEARCH option under the EDIT menu
will produce a prompt for the user for a keyword
to search the headings and entries of the active
diary. Any exact matches will produce a window with
the headings and dates of entries containing matches
for the user to select from.
Importing and exporting text:
Any ASCII text file can be imported into EZDIARY by
selecting the IMPORT option from under the TEXT
menu. It does not matter if the text is delineated
or not, but will be truncated at 2622 characters
(about 500 words or one written page). The user
will be prompted for a filename that contains the
text to import. Once in the active entry window it
can be saved into the diary as described above.
Exporting text is similar, except that the user
will be prompted for a filename to save the current
active entry in. The text will be saved in a non-
delineated format. This function is provided so
that the user can read the entry from within any
other program, or import it into another diary-like
program.
Printing:
Either the current entry can be printed or the whole
diary. This is done by selecting the ENTRY or DIARY
options under the PRINT menu, respectively. The user
must have a parallel printer online and connected to
LPT1 - LPT4. Otherwise, a message will be displayed.
The printer setup should be adjusted to fit that
mentioned above and the option can be selected again.
Diary printing will print, with margins, one entry
per printed page. Printing is possible on dot matrix
and laser type printers. Postscript printers MUST
not be in postscript mode (either pull the cartridge
or deactivate it from within the software that came
with the printer).
Blanking the screen:
Selecting BLANK from the menu will blank the screen
for whatever reason. To get the program back the
user must type and enter the password of the
currently active journal. This provides protection
so that the user can leave the computer while in the
program.
Help:
Besides this file, the program has online help.
Selecting the F1 key while highlighting any option
will produce a help screen for that particular
option. The F1 key searches the HELP subdirectory
created with the install program for the proper
.hlp file. The subdirectory and .hlp files can be
deleted with no harm to the program if the user
desires.
Editing entries:
All entries are created and edited in the same
manner. Text entered is automatically formatted
to one space between words at the end of each line.
Editing keys are as follows:
The BACKSPACE, DELETE, HOME, END, and ARROW keys
work as expected. Ctrl-RIGHT ARROW positions the
cursor at the first character of the next word.
Ctrl-LEFT ARROW positions the cursor at the first
character of the previous word. The BACKSPACE key
will reformat the whole entry in the same form that
the entry will be saved as (i.e. one space only in
between words) if pressed in the upper left corner
of the entry. The editor can be put into INSERT
mode, but do not have it enabled when wordwrapping
as it will cause a program abort! The Ctrl-Z
combination will delete the current line of text.
The ESCAPE key will exit edit mode.
Notes:
The active diary name is listed on the menu line
and the active entry heading is listed in edit
mode directly above the editing screen.
The program uses the computers date as the current
date so make sure your computers date is correct
(can be changed with the date function in dos).
Because I do not compress the data files (to make
the program very fast), the diary files can become
relatively large. One year of entries will take
almost 1 meg of disk space. For me this is not a
problem but if it is you could do two things.
a). Create more than one diary, maybe limiting
each one to a size that can be backed up onto disk
easily.
b). Compress the diary <*.cat> files with your
favorite compression program. Pkzip works really
well, compressing these *.cat files up to 100 times.
The file EZDIARY.QQQ is an example of a batch file
that can be run if you have a pkzip and pkunzip
program specified in your dos path command in your
autoexec.bat file. The above file can be renamed
to a .BAT file and run everytime you want to run
EZDIARY. This will compress and decompress your
files before and after running the program. Pkzip
and Pkunzip are registered trademarks and owned by
their owners. They require registration just as
this program does. It is very important for you
to back up your .CAT diary files regularly. It is
the responsibility of the user to ensure you are
protected from file damage or loss.
The user can escape out of all windows.
