EnVision Publisher -- Answers to Common Questions
--------------------------------------------------------------
Answers to Common Questions
===========================
In this document we included detailed answers to the most
common questions our technical support staff has received. If
you are experiencing difficulties with EnVision Publisher,
please read this document -- chances are, you will find your
answer here.
Question 1: The Mouse works with Microsoft Windows or some
other program, but it does not work with EnVision
Publisher.
Answer: Your mouse driver is not loaded into memory. The
reason the mouse works with Windows is because
Windows has its own mouse driver built in. Our
program relies on the mouse driver that came with
your mouse.
To load the mouse driver into memory type: MOUSE
at the DOS prompt at your root directory (not in
the EVP directory). If this does not work, look
for a subdirectory on your system called MOUSE or
something similar to the name of your mouse
manufacturer. What you are looking for is a file
called MOUSE.COM or something similar (usually
mice drivers have an extension of .COM.) If this
fails as well, look in you DOS directory, DOS 6
cames with the Microsoft mouse driver. To enable
it, change to that subdirectory (DOS), and type
MOUSE. Once you get the mouse driver loaded, you
can change to the subdirectory where you have
EnVision Publisher installed, and run the program.
You know the mouse driver is loaded when you get
the copyright and version number of the mouse
driver, as well as the message: "mouse installed".
If you want the mouse driver to install automatically
when you boot up your system, put the path together
with the name of your mouse driver in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then reboot your system.
Question 2: The mouse cursor does not show on the screen, but
the mouse trackers in the page rulers are tracking
mouse movement, OR, the mouse cursor disappears in
the page area, but it appears in the menu area or
when a dialog is active.

EnVision Publisher -- Answers to Common Questions
--------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: This problem occurs with many other programs, not
just EnVision Publisher, and it is caused by the
fact that you are using an older mouse driver not
designed to be used with your video card, when
this card operates in VGA mode. You will have to
obtain a more recent mouse driver. Please contact
your mouse manufacturer on how to do this.
Most mouse manufacturers have free BBS services
from where you can download their current mouse
driver at no cost to you. Also, if you are using
DOS 6, you can use the MOUSE.COM mouse drivers that
comes with DOS 6 (usually in the DOS directory).
Question 3: Mouse cursor shows on the screen, and EnVision
says "Mouse: YES" in the About dialog, but the
mouse does not respond.
Answer: You may have a video card or a computer that has a
built-in bus-mouse connector, but your mouse is
connected to the serial port. This may cause some
mouse drivers to assume that the mouse is
connected to the bus-port on your video card,
which is incorrect. You may solve this by
disabling the built-in bus-mouse port, or by
connecting the mouse to the bus-port rather than
the serial port. Please refer to your
card/computer documentation for more details on
disabling/enabling bus-mouse ports. Also, some
mouse drivers allow you to specify the port where
the mouse is connected. For example, with some
Logitech mouse drivers, if you start the mouse
driver with the "1" parameter (MOUSE 1), will
force the mouse driver to assume that the mouse is
connected to the COM1 serial port. See your mouse
documentation for more details.
Question 4: When starting EnVision Publisher, the About
dialog, the menus, and the page are displayed on
the screen, but the start-up "program registration
reminder" screen is still in the background, thus
corrupting the screen contents.
Answer: This problem occurs with some older VGA cards when
used with SOME mouse drivers. Many of these VGA
cards were manufactured before the VGA standard
was fully established. There are two ways you can
correct this problem:
1. Run EnVision Publisher in EGA mode. To
accomplish this, enter EVP EGA when

starting the program at the DOS prompt.
You can also try EVP VGAPLUS or EVP EGAPLUS.
See page 97 in the Reference Guide (MANUAL.DOC)
for more information.
2. Obtain a different mouse driver from your
mouse manufacturer. Usually you can interchange
mouse drivers, or you can use MOUSE.COM that
comes with DOS 6.
Question 5: The mouse cursor corrupts the screen as it moves.
Answer: See Question 4 above.
Question 6: Printing is too slow. While printing, the band
counter takes breaks before continuing printing.
Answer: Printing under EnVision Publisher can be sped up
significantly (sometimes by a factor a 4 or more),
if you configure some of your computer's XMS
(extended memory) to act as EMS memory (expanded
memory). If you have DOS 5 or higher, you can
convert XMS to EMS by including HIMEM.SYS first
and then EMM386.EXE with the appropriate
parameters in your CONFIG.SYS file on the root
directory of your hard disk. Fore more details
please see "Print speedup" in the Help Topics in
the Help menu, and also please refer to your DOS
manual. Please see the section "Printing Hints and
Facts" in this manual for more details.
A binary print spooler will also improve print
speed. When you register, we will include a
print spooler at no charge if you ask for it.
Also, printing at lower resolution (DPI) is much
faster than printing at high resolution.
Question 6: Your dot-matrix printer prints garbage, or it
pushes form feeds.
Answer: You are using the wrong emulation and/or
resolution (DPI) for your printer. Make sure that
your printer's DIP switches and/or built-in menu
is set properly. Many printers support more than
one emulation, so please make sure that the
emulation you selected in EnVision Publisher's
Print dialog matches that of your printer. Please
see the section "Printing Hints and Facts" in this
manual for more details.
Question 7: The contents of the printed page are split across
several pages.

EnVision Publisher -- Answers to Common Questions
--------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: If you are using EnVision Publisher on a network,
make sure that your network's CAPTURE utility
(it's called different names under different
networks) is resident, it is set to handle large
binary files, and it has a "timeout" value large
enough to prevent print-job cutout.
This problem can also occur on printers that have
built-in timeout routines. Set the timeout to a
larger value.
Question 8: Cannot print a full page in high resolution on a
LaserJet printer.
Answer: To print a full page at high resolution (300 DPI)
on a LaserJet printer (except the LaserJet 4),
your printer must have at least 1 Meg of memory
(this is printer memory, not computer memory). (On
the LaserJet III family of printers you need at
least 1.5 Meg.) This is necessary because the
printer needs that much memory to rasterize a full
page -- this is a printer requirement, not
EnVision Publisher. If your printer has less than
1 Meg (possibly 512k), you can either print up to
one half page in high resolution, or full page at
150 or 75 DPI. The LaserJet 4 uses a different
page rasterization technique, so this does not
apply.
Generally, most newer LaserJet and compatible
printers have 1 Meg or more of memory, but some
older models came standard with 512k and can be
upgraded to 1.5, 2.0, or 2.5 Meg. or more. If your
printer has less than 1 Meg, we recommend that you
upgrade its memory to 1 Meg or more. This will
improve the use of your printer not only with
EnVision Publisher, but also with other graphical
programs.
Question 9: On a PostScript printer, only the Helvetique font
prints, while the other fonts print as Courier.
Answer: When printing on PostScript printers, and the
"PostScript fonts" checkbox is checked, EnVision
Publisher will not use its own scalable fonts, but
rather the fonts that are resident in your
PostScript printer. When you register in order to
receive EnVision Publisher Plus or EnVision
Publisher Pro, you will receive other fonts that
match your PostScript printer's resident fonts.

EnVision Publisher -- Answers to Common Questions
--------------------------------------------------------------
Question 10: On a CGA (Color Graphics Adapter) display,
EnVision Publisher runs in Black and White.
Answer: The CGA standard is capable of displaying 4 colors
at a resolution of 320 x 200. At the resolution of
640 x 200, the CGA will operate in 2 colors (Black
and White). Because a 320 x 200 screen is just too
small for EnVision Publisher to operate in, the
program will run in 640 x 200 in 2 colors. This is
the mode that most applications will use in CGA.
It is important to note that the CGA is a very old
standard, with very limited capabilities. We
recommend you upgrade your system to a VGA or better.
Question 11: When printing small type at low resolution (60 or
75 DPI), some characters are uneven.
Answer: This occurs because at low resolution, the program
has to approximate the actual character size.
Correct this by printing at a higher resolution
(DPI). Remember: low resolution is good for drafts,
but your final document should be printed at your
printer's highest resolution.
Question 12: My mouse cursor disappear after printing.
Answer: If you have any EMS or XMS memory there may be a
memory conflict with one of your other programs.
Try running EnVision Publisher with the following
parameters: EVP NOEMS NOXMS. (You type this at the
DOS prompt in the subdirectory where the program is
located, instead of typing only EVP the way you
normally would.) These commands tell EnVision
not to use the EMS or XMS memory that you may have.
There are additional command line parameters that
are located at the back of your manual on page 97
and 98 of the Reference Guide (MANUAL.DOC).
If you are running any memory resident programs,
there may be a conflict. Try running EnVision
Publisher while they are not in memory. An example
of a memory resident program would be a menu program.
Question 13: My computer crashes after printing.
Answer: See the answer to question 12 above.
Question 14: Program is acting eratically and/or crashes.
Answer: If your may have an incompatible math co-processor.
Turn it off with this command on the DOS prompt:
SET 87=NO
You can later turn it back on with SET 87=YES
