Dear R&R Version 4.0 User:
In the Data Based Advisor Forum you'll find the R&R FoxPro 2 Retrofit
Kit in the Database Tools library (Library 7). This kit adds support for
FoxPro 2.0 compact and compound index files to R&R Version 4.0. Please
read on for installation instructions.
The FoxPro 2 Retrofit Kit contains the following files from R&R Version
4.0f: RR.EXE, RR.OVL, RRUNTIME.EXE, and RRUN.EXE. To minimize download
time, the files are packed into two self-unpacking files named RRFP1.EXE
and RRFP2.EXE. Also, there's a RREADME file containing documentation
updates, which is included in this file at the end of the letter.
To install the FoxPro 2 Retrofit Kit:
1) Download RRFP1.EXE and RRFP2.EXE into your R&R Version 4 directory.
2) Enter the following command to install RR.EXE, RRUNTIME.EXE, and
RRUN.EXE.
RRFP1
If you don't want to install the runtime, enter the command as
follows:
RRFP1 RR.EXE
3) Enter the following command to install RR.OVL.
RRFP2
4) Backup RRFP1.EXE and RRFP2.EXE to diskette and delete them from
your hard disk.
You may install the FoxPro 2 Retrofit Kit any number of times if you have
multiple copies of R&R. You may freely copy and distribute the FoxPro 2
Retrofit Kit if you need to send a copy to another R&R Version 4.0 user.
The FoxPro 2 Retrofit Kit works only when installed into an existing R&R
Version 4.0 directory.

SUPPORT FOR ADDITIONAL INDEX FILE FORMATS
R&R now supports FoxPro Version 2 index file formats: compact IDX indexes
and CDX indexes.
RRSETUP
Display and display adapter:
R&R can now automatically detect the type of display and display adapter
used by the system on which it runs. To enable this automatic detection,
retain the default setting of "Automatic" for the "Display" and "Display
adapter" fields in RRSETUP. If the automatically determined settings
are not appropriate, use RRSETUP to select the desired display and
display adapter.
Hercules display adapters:
If you use a monochrome display and a Hercules display adapter configured
for "Full" mode, use RRSETUP to select "Monochrome" as your display. Do not
use the "Automatic" option.
INTERACTIVE R&R
GLOBAL DEFAULT INTERNATIONAL PUNCTUATION
In general, the numeric punctuation you select with the /Global Default
International Punctuation command controls the way you enter numeric values
in the product. However, you must use US numeric punctuation (i.e. a dot
decimal symbol and a comma thousands separator) in the following places:
numeric constants in calculated field expressions, numeric values indicating
point size of fonts used in memo fields, and numeric constants used as scope
values or in filter expressions in the runtime control file.
RUNTIME
RI_MINDEX
In addition to changing the saved master index, you can use the RI_MINDEX
field in the runtime control file to supply a master index for a report that
was saved without an index or to remove a saved master index from a report.
To supply a master index, follow the instructions in the User's Guide for
providing a master index name. To remove a master index, place the letter
R (for record number order) preceded by a comma in RI_MINDEX (i.e. ,R).
RI_FILTER
RI_FILTER expressions can now include total fields, as long as the total
fields have been designated as pre-processed with the /Field Total Options
Processing command and as long as the total fields reset on the highest
level (most inclusive) group field for which a pre-processed total has
been defined. Filter expressions can also include calculated fields that
are based on such total fields. As a general rule, RI_FILTER expressions
can include any field that can be used in an R&R query.
Runtime control file:
When you run an R&R report with the runtime program, the runtime control
file is opened for shared access. In network environments, this allows
multiple users to access and modify different records in the control file
simultaneously. The way in which this file is opened is not affected by the
"Allow file write access" setting in your R&R configuration file.
Runtime temporary file names:
When you use the /I argument to append a unique user ID to the runtime
status and temporary files, the runtime now creates temporary file names
that begin with #R. For example, if you issue the following command to
specify USER2 as a unique user name, R&R will create temporary files named
#RUSER2.*
RUN RRUNTIME RRUNIN 5 USER2/I
Runtime error messages:
Runtime now displays error messages that are generated before the runtime
output file is created.
Alternate video modes:
Runtime assumes an 80-column video mode. If you are using more than 80
columns, you should not display runtime reports on screen or use the
RI_DISPERR or RI_STATUS runtime control fields to have R&R display error
and status messages on screen.
If you use an 80-column video mode that allows more than 25 lines
on the screen, you can call the runtime with a switch that tells
R&R to display any error messages, banners, and menus on the last line
of the screen, rather than on the 25th line (the default). R&R will continue
to use the top 24 lines for reports that are displayed. Any lines between
the 25th line and the last line on your screen will be unchanged.
To enable support for alternative video modes, use the /S switch when
you call the runtime. Without a numeric argument, /S will cause R&R to
automatically detect how many lines are used. If the number of lines R&R
detects is not appropriate, use (number)/S, where number is the total
number of lines on the screen.
For example, the following runtime command issued from within an application
program will run all the reports specified in the RRUNIN.DBF control
file and will display any error messages, banners, and menus on the
automatically detected last line of the screen: RUN RRUNTIME RRUNIN /S.
On the other hand, the following command will display such messages on
the 50th line of the screen: RUN RRUNTIME RRUNIN 50/S.
Batch files:
Because of a change in RRUNTIME, the runtime swapper program, applications
will not be swapped if they call the runtime using a batch file. To cause
the runtime to swap such an application, define a memory variable containing
the string "rruntime" or "RRUNTIME" (do not mix upper and lower case).
This will enable the runtime program to recognize the application as
swappable.
USING R&R WITH DESQVIEW
In order to configure DESQview for R&R, you should be aware of the
following features of R&R: 1) Except for Print Preview, R&R is DESQview
aware. It does not write directly to the screen except when you use the
/Print Preview command. 2) Print Preview is a graphical feature. 3) R&R
supports the use of a math co-processor. 4) R&R can be configured to use
its own colors. 5) R&R does not use expanded or extended memory. 6) The
R&R serial number controls your access to R&R. When you run R&R
interactively, the serial number is "locked." It is released by R&R only
when you /Exit. Any other termination of R&R will cause the serial number
to remain locked and unavailable for use until you run the RRUSERS program
to unlock it.
NEW AND CHANGED ERROR MESSAGES
Cannot read...
The "Cannot read (file name)" error messages may also indicate that the
specified file is opened for exclusive use or locked by another user on
the network. Try running your report again later.
Cannot Preview current page size:
This new message indicates that R&R is unable to preview your page. Use the
/Print Options Page-Margins command to check your page length, right margin,
and page orientation.
Duplicate switch: /(switch):
This new message indicates that the command you have used to install R&R
specifies the same switch twice. Re-run the installation program, reading
the installation chapter of the User's Guide and the RRINSTAL instruction
screen for information about the command line switches.
Invalid filter in control file:
This message may also indicate that the RI_FILTER expression in the runtime
control file makes invalid use of totals by referencing a running total or
a pre-processed total that resets at a level other than the highest level
at which a pre-processed total is defined. See the Query chapter for an
explanation of what totals are allowed in queries and RI_FILTER expressions.
Invalid value in (field):
This new message indicates that the value in the specified field in the
runtime control file is too long. See the Runtime chapter of the User's
Guide for information about the maximum length of runtime control file fields.
Cannot read ASCII memo file:
This message has been changed to "Cannot read memo file" since it can apply
to both ASCII and database memo files. If this message occurs when you try
to print a report, R&R is unable to access the memo file (either an ASCII
memo file, a database file with a memo field, or the DBT file that contains
the database memo). See the explanation of the "Cannot read..." error
messages.
