  5. Welcome to the start of a new era: MIDI for the most powerful operating
  6. system available for the personal computer - OS/2.  This Device Driver
  7. will allow MIDI applications to be developed for, or ported to, OS/2 with
  8. a bare minimum of effort.  The driver allows full access to the
  9. capabilities of the MPU-401 standard established by Roland.

  11. If you want to get started, read the INSTALL.DOC file for installation
  12. instructions.

  14. As an end-user, you will find that this is the beginning of a wonderful
  15. relationship.  With the capabilities of OS/2, such tasks as managing your
  16. equipment, sequencing your favorite jams, and managing those hot sounds
  17. will be easier than ever before.  Of course, this is only the beginning.
  18. We have enclosed a few utility programs, and we're working feverishly to
  19. develop a new set of applications - programs that are designed specifically
  20. for OS/2.  If you would like to receive information as these products are
  21. made available, please fill out and return the registration form (see the
  22. file REGIST.FRM).

  24. To promote OS/2 as the MIDI environment of the future, we are distributing
  25. this Device Driver as "FreeWare".  The driver, the utility programs, and all
  26. the documentation are held under copyright to Delta Music Systems; however,
  27. this entire package may still be distributed free of charge.  This driver
  28. may not be bundled with any commercial product without permission from
  29. Delta Music Systems.  If you are interested, please write to the address
  30. below.

  32. If you are a developer, you will be interested to know that we have
  33. integrated some of the advanced features of OS/2 into the driver.  Most are
  34. transparent to the application (except where it simplifies data handling),
  35. and other features are available through our MPU interface library (see the
  36. file ORDER.FRM).  For information on using the basic commands via the OS/2
  37. API, see the file PROGRAM.DOC.

  39. The utility programs are included as both 16 bit applications for OS/2 1.x
  40. and as 32 bit applications for OS/2 2.x.  Unpack the utilities for the
  41. version of OS/2 you are currently running.

  43. The utility programs were written only to support the device driver - these
  44. are not intended as end-user applications.  The programs include:
  45.  
  46. MPURESET:  Resets the MPU Interface to its "power-up" defaults.
  47.  
  48. MPUREC:    Records music for later playback via MPUPLAY.  Allows two optional
  49.            parameters: -d to display the data being recorded, and a filename
  50.            to store the data in.
  51.  
  52. MPUPLAY:   Play the music recorded by MPUREC.  One song is provided, "The
  53.            Swan" be Saint-Saens. Brought to OS/2 from a Cakewalk version
  54.            performed by David Chaloux.  MIDI Channel 3 is piano, 2 is cello.

  56. MPUINFO:   Display information from the interface and device driver.
  57.  
  58. MIDIDUMP:  Display a hex dump of the data arriving at the interface.
  59.            Takes one parameter: -e to turn on echoing of the data.

  61. MTDUMP:    A multi-threaded version of MIDIDUMP.

  65. Delta Music Systems does not support the art of VaporWare.  The recent trend
  66. of announcing products years before they are ready is abhorrent.  We will not
  67. announce products that only exist on paper.  We aim for zero-defect code.
