Avro Lancaster Mark X
---------------------
The Lancaster X was a Canadian built version of the Avro Lancaster heavy
bomber, differing from contemporary British models mainly by having
American (Packard) Merlin 38 engines in place of the Rolls-Royce variety.
Of the 7,377 Lancasters built, 430 were produced by Victory Aircraft Ltd.
at a plant adjacent to Malton Airport (now Pearson International) outside
Toronto. This plant later became Avro Canada's main factory, and is now
owned by McDonnell Douglas, who produce wings for their airliners there.
The AF Lancaster is intended to represent KB726, the aircraft which the
Canadian Warplane Heritage Lancaster (one of only two airworthy examples
in the world) is also depicted as. The orignal, operated by 419 Squadron,
RCAF, was on a mission over France shortly after D-Day in June 1944 when
it was attacked by a Junkers Ju88. The aircraft caught fire and the crew
were ordered to bail-out. Unfortunately the rear turret was jammed and
the gunner was unable to get out. The mid-upper gunner Pilot Officer
Mynarski remained in the blazing aircraft attempting to free the trapped
gunner. He failed in his attempts and finally bailed out himself. By
a tragic twist of fate P.O. Mynarski landed safely but did not survive the
terrible burns he had received. When the aircraft crashed the turret
broke away and the tail gunner, Flying Officer Brophy was thrown clear. He
lived to tell the tale and as a result Mynarski was posthumously awarded
the Victoria Cross - the British Commonwealth's highest award for valor.
This is my first attempt at using AAF to build an aircraft, and I am quite
pleased with the way it turned out, visually at any rate. Unfortunately I
hit the 182 part barrier before I was able to include the squadron letters
(VR*A) on the fuselage sides. I was likewise unable to provide the plane
with propellers. However, for those who would like to modify the aircraft
by removing or revising parts so that these items can be added, I have
included the .AFX file for use with AAF.
I have been less successful with the flight model for the Lancaster. There
are no good source files for multi-engined propeller driven planes in ASD
and the one I used, based on the Beechcraft Starship, is not too suitable.
Hopefully somebody more knowledgable than I will be able to improve on my
.SIM.
