THIRD AIRCRAFT IN A SIX PART SERIES (FIRST TWO BEING
AC767.ZIP AND KLM310.ZIP).
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AIRLINERS. THE L1011 HAS
A VERY COMPLEX AND SOPHISTICATED SHAPE, STARTING
WITH AN ALMOST "DOLPHIN-LIKE" NOSE AND ENDING WITH
THE EXTREMELY DELICATE BLENDING OF THE TAIL ENGINE
INTO THE VERTICAL STABILIZER. THE CURVES IN THIS PART
OF THE AIRCRAFT MUST HAVE DRIVEN THE DESIGNERS CRAZY!
IT IS A VERY ELEGANT SOLUTION, COMPARED TO THE MUCH
MORE SIMPLISTIC LINES OF THE DC-10.
THIS AIRCRAFT WAS PRECISION BUILT USING PLANS FROM
A 1:200 HASEGAWA AIRLINER KIT.
THE FINISHED MODEL ALSO PROVIDED A VALUABLE 3D
REFERENCE. ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS AND DATA FROM
"JANES ALL THE WORLDS AIRCRAFT" WAS ALSO CONSULTED.
LIKE ALL AAF DESIGNS, THIS ONE IS SOMEWHAT OF A
COMPROMISE DUE TO THE BUILT IN LIMITATIONS OF BOTH
FS4 AND AAF. THE 3RD ENGINE ON THIS AIRCRAFT EXTRACTS
A HEAVY PRICE...THE ADDITIONAL PARTS REQUIRED TO MODEL
THIS COMPLEX SHAPE, ALL BUT ELIMINATE ANY CHANCE OF
BUILDING A COMPLETEY DETAILED AIRLINER.
I HAVE CHOSEN TO BUILD AN ACCURATE SHAPE, AND DETAIL
THE DELTA LOGO AND SOME OF THE PAINT SCHEME AS
WELL AS I COULD. IF ONE EXAMINES THE AFX FILE YOU WILL
NOTICE HOW I GREATLY SIMPLIFIED THE TAIL
ENGINE/STABILIZER AS A MEASURE TO CONSERVE PARTS.
INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH THOUGH, BECAUSE FS4 IS UNABLE TO
VISUALLY SEPARATE PARTS OF THE SAME COLOR, IT IS
VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO NOTICE THESE SHORTCUTS.
I STILL HAVE SOME MAJOR BLEED-THROUGH...ESPECIALLY THE
TAIL ENGINE INTAKE AREA THROUGH THE BODY (WHEN VIEWED
FROM BELOW OR FRONT-ON...ALL OTHER ANGLES WORK WELL
THOUGH). I USED 181 PARTS ON THIS ONE, AND DIDN'T
HAVE ANY LEFT OVER TO BUILD A BLOCKER TO CORRECT
THIS PROBLEM, SO I HAVE INCLUDED THE AFX FILE FOR
THOSE WHO MIGHT HAVE DIFFERENT PRIORITIES.
I JUST CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO WASTE PARTS ON STUFF
YOU CAN'T SEE!
LOOK FOR A 4TH INSTALLMENT IN THIS SERIES, A 747-400
WITHIN 3 WEEKS (AIRLINE/PROBABLY JAL)
