History
One of the most frightening aircrafts in WW2 was the Junkers Ju87, better
known as an abbreviation of its duty Sturzkampfbomber - Stuka (dive
bomber). It was deadly and effective in the Spanish Civil War, so the
German Airforce Ministry decided it as a backbone of their air strategy.
Stukas were ugly, and carried sirens screeming their unmistakable warning
of soon coming death when they dived against their targets. In the
beginning of WW2, during attacks against Poland and France, the Stuka
proved effective when carrying out bomb raids against tactical aims and in
demoralizing opposing troops.
But with the start of the Battle of Brittain, the first time the Stukas
were opposed by superior fighers like the Hurricane, and this unveiled
their real use: a weapon only effective when unopposed! During the first
six days so many Stukas were shot down, that the poor remains of the Stuka-
squads were withdrawn from the front.
After the Battle of Brittain desaster, Stukas were engaged on many
theatres, but had never the success of the early days of WW2. Finally a
improved version, the Ju87G having double power as the B version, equipped
with two machine cannons, was quite succesful at the Russian front.
The model displayed here shows the colours and markings of a Ju87B-2 of the
II/St.G2 in North Africa 1941. The idea for this colour sceme and some
facts of this text come from a modelling kit I assembled in the 70ies.

Painting/Special effects
Painting:
The Stuka shown in this archive is painted in a desert camouflage sceme, I
chose this, since the orange colour makes it possible to see the aircraft
in standard sceneries. According to AAF limitations, the green patches
shown in this camouflage scheme were omitted. I preferred to show the
beautiful snake that one of the members of II/St.G2 painted to his
aircraft. Due to my personal political oppinions the model also lacks the
swastikas at the tail, if someone cannot fly without them, he/she might
contact me and I will return a model that also displays these damn
markings.
Special effects:
Following special effects are included:
- Propeller changes to circle when engine is started
- Inner part of double-wing is extended when flaps are employed
- At speeds abowe 340kts the dive-brakes are engaged
Flying Ju87
This is my first try constructing an aircraft with A&SD / AAF. Though the
grafic "construction" appeared quite easy I had quite trouble in doing the
flight model. (I dont't have the knowledge of Hans van Wyhe!) I wanted the
model to show the main performance data and the diving capabilities as ell.
The result is a compromise which shows the Stuka's slowly responses to the
control column and keeps the main performance data. The drawback is - to
my oppinion - a too short starting run and bad capabilities to reduce speed
for landing.
Flight Instructions
Take-off: Full throttle - rotate at 80kts - trim up several notches
Landing: Since the Ju87 is quite heavy, it responds to nose dropping with
remarkable acceleration. Keep this in mind when preparing your
approach. My testing on the flight model revealed the following
procedure as succesful: Be shure your glide will not exceed
4 degrees. Cut throttle to about 1200-1300rpm and extend flaps
5 degrees, about 1 mile before runway threshold employ full flaps
and reduce speed to about 100kts. Reaching threshold cut throttle
to idle and pull yoke until Stuka touches down. (If speed's too
high above the runway you may use the dive-brakes to reduce speed
(press <H>). I don't know, but I don't think that this was practice
on the Stuka)
Diving: Are stressed by your boss at work? Wanna lay an egg into your
neighbour's garden (he's always playing this horrible music too
loud)? The Stuka is the right answer! Simply climb to 25000-26000ft
and then....
Lower the aircrafts nose until you fly vertically down. When
reaching about 400 kts employ dive-brakes (press <H>). At 4000 ft
AGL gently pull the yoke until you fly horizontal again.
(Imagine you released that 1100 pounder shortly before).
Don't forget to deploy the dive-brakes.

Without its help the design of some parts would have taken much more time
and calculations. Thank you, Tom!
