COMMENTS
THE BOEING 747SP DONE IN THE LIVERY OF BRANIFF AIRLINES PRIOR
TO ITS EXTNCTION.
THE 747SP IS, INDEED, A UNIQUE AIRCRAFT. ITS PRODUCTION PLANS
WERE ANNOUNCED BY BOEING IN AUGUST, 1973 AND BY SEPTEMBER OF THAT
YEAR PAN AM PLACED THE FIRST ORDERS. IT WAS DESIGNED AS A
COUNTERATTACK ON THE LONG-RANGE MARKETS DOMINATED BY THE DC-10,
SERIES 30 AND 40. ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT WAS IN JULY, 1975 AND
WAS DELIVERED TO ITS LAUNCH CUSTOMER THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
BASICALLY, THE 747SP IS A SHORTENED 747-200. THE WINGS ARE
IDENTICAL EXCEPT THE 747SP HAS A MUCH SIMPLER FLAP ARRANGEMENT.
THE FUSELAGE IS 48 FT SHORTER THAN THE 200-SERIES, WITH SECTIONS
REMOVED BOTH FORE AND AFT OF THE WINGS. THE VERTICAL STABILIZER
IS SIMILAR TO THE 200 SERIES, BUT 60 INCHES HAD BEEN ADDED
TO THE TOP TO COMPENSATE FOR THE SHORTER LEVER ARM. THE
HORIZONTAL STABILIZERS HAVE SIMILAR 60 INCH EXTENSIONS ON EACH
SIDE.

CREATION OF THE 747SP USING AAF WAS A BIT OF TEDIOUS WORK.
WORKING FROM CRAIG MOSHER'S PAN AM 747, EXTESIVE USE OF THE POINT
EDITOR WAS MADE GUIDED BY NUMEROUS CALCULATIONS INVOLVING
SHORTENING OF THE FUSELAGE AND ALTERING BOTH THE VERTICAL AND
HORIZONTAL DIMENSIONS. THE RESULTS WERE FAIRLY DECENT FOR MY
FIRST ATTEMPT AT IT.
