A public domain Go-program
version 1.0
LANGUAGE
========
First of all, I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of all the English
texts in my program. Being a Dutchman, English is not my native language
and I'm sure I made a lot of errors in my grammar and otherwise, both in
this document and in the program itself. I did my best to make as few errors
as possible, but there must be quite a lot of them left. If you find any of
them disturbing, please write them to me on the address below.
ABOUT GO
========
Go is a game played by two contestants. In China and Japan it`s just as
popular as chess and draughts in Europe. There are a lot of legends about
the invention of Go. One of these names the Chinese emperor Shun, who
reigned from 2255 to 2205 B.C., as the originator of the game. It is said
that he invented the game in order to strengthen the weak mind of his sun.
Since then, Go has become highly popular in Asia, and nowadays Go is becom-
ing more and more popular in Europe as well. Go players prefer Go to chess
because the chances of a drawn game (in Go it`s called `jigo`) are very
small, a good handicap system in games between a weaker and a stronger
player and an infinite number of possibilities, situations and strategies.
It is often said that whereas chess is a battle, Go is a full-scale war, so
wide and farranging are its possible tactics and strategies.
TURBOGO
=======
As far as I know, there isn't any public domain or shareware Go program with
a complete Go tutorial in the help-function (including all the rules and
advices about becoming a better player) and without any 'shareware restric-
tions' like only a 9x9 board (the smallest one) to play on. For this reason,
I have decided to release TurboGo as a public domain program. TurboGo is a
Go program for the computer, written in TurboPascal. Although it will be of
some value to stronger players, this program is especially written for
unexperienced players or people who are not familiar with the rules of go.
For this reason, TurboGo has an extensive help section, containing i.a. the
rules of Go, advices on how to play go, an example of a game and addresses
of Go associations and clubs. Please give this section your attention: the
information provided is very useful! Just press the <F3>-key anywhere in the
program to enter the help section.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================
TurboGo requires the following from your computer:
- IBM-compatible MS-DOS PC
- VGA-screen
- 640 Kb memory
- although you can use TurboGo with a keyboard, a mouse is recommended.
PUBLIC DOMAIN
=============
This version of TurboGo is public domain. This means that it`s allowed to
copy this program and give it to others (in fact, I`d really like you to do
so) on the condition that these five unmodified files are distributed
together:
Filename File size Description
======== ========= ===========
GO.BAT 33 Batchfile to start TurboGo
TURBOGO1.EXE 97.161 The picture
TURBOGO2.EXE 141.209 The Go program itself
README.DOC 7.124 The file you are reading right now
LEESMIJ.DOC 6.974 This text in the Dutch language
If one of these files is missing or if one of the file sizes named here is
not correct, this is not the original version of TurboGo. It could be
possible that one (or more) of TurboGo's files is infected by a virus or
otherwise modified. Whatever the reason might be, I can't recommend you to
use or distribute this version of TurboGo. If you would like to receive the
original version, please read the information below.
A HINT
======
Try starting up TurboGo with the parameter '/s', like this:
go /s <RETURN>
With this parameter, TurboGo can show you additional information about the
game in progress, like influence, move values if the computer makes a move,
the moves the computer thinks about etc. I use this option to track down
bugs (errors) in my program, but it's not an official part of the program.
Although some information (like the reasons why the computer makes a cer-
tain move) will be quite obscure and the graphics part of it is not working
100% correctly at the time, it may be nice to look at it anyway. You can
switch on and off the options by pressing the corresponding keys.
ORDERING INFORMATION
====================
Although a lot of time and effort is spent on this program, there is still
a lot of room for improvement, mainly regarding the playing strength of
TurboGo (for the experts: especially with life and death, a bigger joseki
library and improved semeai, influence and shape routines). In addition to
that, in the registered version you will be able to save your startup prefe-
rences to disk. If you would like to receive the latest registered version
of TurboGo, please transfer DFL 25,-- (25 Dutch guilders) to Postbank N.V.
account number 51.90.266 from W.A.D. van der Loeff in Amsterdam, The Nether-
lands. Please mention your address and disksize! You can obtain the original
Public Domain version of TurboGo by transferring DFL 7,50 to the same bank
account number. Your contribution will give me the opportunity to advertise
in papers and magazines, and tell even more people about my program and Go!
Please note that you are not obliged to register. although I'd appreciate it
if you did!
If it's difficult (or impossible) for you to transfer the money to my bank
account, you can send it to me by mail as well, but please do it with a
registered letter: this way you can be sure it doesn't get lost in the mail!
OTHER INFORMATION
=================
Because I`m not a professional programmer, there are undoubtedly some mis-
takes and bugs in this program. If you happen to find one of these mistakes,
or if you have other comments or suggestions about TurboGo, I'd really like
to receive a letter or postcard from you, whether you register this program
or not! Please write your comments/suggestions to:
Arnoud van der Loeff
Wilhelminastraat 159-3

The Netherlands
I hope you will enjoy TurboGo. Please register or drop me a postcard some-
time!
