The MGM-52 Lance, in service since 1972, achieved great gains over
previous missiles in this category. The Lance is considerably lighter and
less bulky, is cheaper to build and operate while achieving improved
accuracy. Using an amphibious tracked launch vehicle, the Lance also has
excellent mobility and can be deployed in a variety of terrains.
With the precisely controlled sustainer and spin-stabilization, in-flight
accuracy was already highly satisfactory. However, upgraded versions have
distance measuring command guidance which increases accuracy even more.
The Lance can also carry a variety of warheads, including conventional,
nuclear and neutron explosives.
Most MGM-52s are deployed in Europe, and serve as one of the few NATO
missile systems to counter many thousands of former Soviet battlefield
weapons in the same class. A versatile and accurate weapon able to deliver
a powerful payload, the Lance will continue to serve America's defense into
the next century.
