From 1969, the Roland II has been developed as a mobile battlefield air
defense system fired from a launch tube on a tracked vehicle. Actual dep-
loyment of the Roland did not occur until after 1977, due to technical
delays and a cost overrun of several hundred percent. Finally, the Roland
II was deployed to only a single light battalion for use with the Rapid
Deployment Force.
The Roland II incorporates both plain optical clear-weather guidance and
blindfire radar guidance for more demanding conditions. The folding wings
pop out when the missile leaves the launch tube, the radar having already
engaged and locked onto the target. The U.S. Army carries the Roland II
on an M109 tracked vehicle.
In the future, the U.S. Army has plans to adapt the Roland II launching
system to fire the smaller Stinger missile. This would allow the launcher
to carry 10 Stingers in a single Roland fire unit, five in each tube. The
New system would also be equipped with an updated radar system and fire
control processor.
