FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
& HIDDEN SECRETS
One of the greatest things about Duke Nukem 3D are all the gags
Here are a few:
* You need BUILD to see this. Go into E2L1, and (not moving from the
initial location that your at) using the 2D mode, move yourself
outside and into space. Go to the 3D mode, and you should be
"floating" right outside the window, and right near that spaceship
docked nearby. Float to the other side of that ship, and you'll see
that it's name is, ironically enough: USS FRAMERATE.
* go to E2L1. after you get the pipe bomb, stand next to one of the
windows. face almost parallel to the window, but keep the reticle
aimed out into space. toss a pipe bomb, and watch it sail away! a
great way to get back at that pesky space ship. I don't know if you
can blow it up, but it makes you feel good anyway.
* There is a number on the bottom of a bench on E2L2 underneath the
Earth Defense sign that reads 1138. The numbers "1138" found on E2L2
refer to the first movie that George Lucas made, entitled "THX-1138".
And there are some places you can go to see messages from the
levelord. One is on E1L5. There is a shrinker that hits you from
another room across lava. Go to the lava room and use a cheat to get
the jetpack and fly to the shrinker. on the wall is a message that
says "You're not supposed to be here. Levelord" There is one other i
found on E3L1. get to the end of the level and you see a crack in the
wall you can look out of and see a building and stuff, us DNCLIP and
go through the wall. Walk forward and look to your left and there is
another message form the levelord. There are probably more. Also there
is a rumor about a room with the designer's photo's. Look in the
textures in the Levelmaker and you willl see them. But i don't know
where they are in the game.
* if you shrink SOME of the dancers (I am not asure which ones) and then
give them money, they will stay shrunk it is really cool.
* Play the launch facility with a friend and have one of you go inside
the rocket and have the other hit the switch...well you don't go to
the moon but you do explode!
* You must freeze monster, then wait until he melt. Get the shrinker and
shrink monster. Try not killing kim, just get freezer again, duck and
schoot at him when he start growing. When he melt, he will be really
small and shoot like always.
* (5/27/96) - from -Falcon At any time that the height limit in any
stage is high enough to fall from the top and die, turn on God Mode
(DNKROZ/DNCORNHOLIO) and if neccesary, use the code to get the jetpack
(DNITEMS/DNSTUFF). Fly all the way up as high as you can and switch to
the view mode where you are standing 3 feet in back of Duke. Now,
leaving God Mode on, fall all the way to what would be a gory death
and notice that when he hits, it freezes on a few select frames of
Duke's animations that show his head snapping back and him spitting
blood. You can walk around like this, and even shoot with this glitch
intact, but I think opening a door will cause him to go normal again.
* (5/27/96) - from -Falcon There are two points in which you can try
this Glitch: In the very beginning of the game, on the rooftop, or in
the second level in the sewer. All you have to do is get to the vent
that you drop down to get to the street or the shaft beneath the cover
of the manhole and as you start to fall, repeatedly turn your jetpack
off and then on, trying to let yourself fall a few inches each time.
If you get it right, both the top and bottom openeings will
mysteriously seal off and thery'll be no exit. The only way out is
suicide. Time to whip out the old RPG and kiss your ass goodbye...
* (5/22/96) - from Paul Forst / Iron DukeWhat you do, is got to any
level with any women in it (strippers, cheerleaders, etc.) and shrink
them (one side note: if you shrink the cheerleaders in the boss level
- the Stadium - in episode 3, they unshrink bigger than before), once
they have been shrunk select the freezethrower and fire at them. You
will usually hear a cry like an alien dying and possibly a spurt of
blood, but they will not die. Then when they unshrink, they will be
indestructable. You can fire off 100 RPG's at them and they'll still
keep on dancing. Also the aliens that always appear when you kill one
of the girls will not appear if you use this technique... There is
also another related glitch where you first freeze them, then shrink
them and then freeze them again. When they unshrink they will be
indestructable but you WILL be able to freeze them again, but this
time they will still be dancing while frozen, and if you then walk up
to them you'll shatter them to pieces. These glitches are in the full
version, I don't know if they will or will not work with the shareware
version ... Try it out and enjoy...
* On the second board, collapse the building and blast open the pothole!
Throw a gernade in the hole and watch the same gernade fall from the
sky and go back into the pothole the same way you threw it in!
* In the theater bathroom on level 1, check just above the urinals for a
special phone number. Remember Tommy Tutone from the 80's?
* Throw a pipe bomb or shoot an RPG into a teleporter. :-)
* Hang out by the fire hydrant in level 1 with an RPG ready. Swallow the
steroids and shoot a rocket back towards where you start the level.
Then, immediately run after that rocket. Don't run into it or you're
toast. Instead, run past it on the side. Then, turn around right as
you reach the building. If you time it right, you can take the rocket
right in the face. Then you get to see your blood spread all over the
ground. Suicide has never been so fun! (by James C. Barnes)
* Go into the bar next to the disco on level 2 and check out what's
playing on the tube. Do the words "slow-speed chase" ring a bell?
(Note : you won't get to see what's on TV if you fire an RPG into the
room before entering.)
* Turn off clipping mode with 'dnclip' and walk through a mirror. Neat
effect!
* Go into the chapel on level 3 and walk up to the altar. Shoot out both
stained-glass windows and then press the space bar against the face
panel. The cross will invert, and a passage will open on the left
side. You'll find an octabrain and a corpse in a green space suit.
Duke says, "That's one doomed space marine!" (If you haven't played
Doom DeathMatch, you won't get the joke). There's a chaingun on the
ledge behind the corpse, too.
* Try this: go outside, turn on God mode, and fly up with the jetpack as
high as you can go. Press F7 to turn on view mode, and then turn off
your jetpack. After you hit the ground you'll get a nice view of what
you'd look like if God mode wasn't on!
* On Level 6, the Launch Facility, you start out facing a slow-moving
turbine. Go between any two blades of the turbine, and drop a
holoduke. Step back, and watch its behavior as the blades hit it.
Utterly useless, but interesting.
* Try using your pistol or shotgun to sink a few balls on the pool table
near the bar on level 2. You can also hit the space bar against the
table to shoot the balls, too.
* On level 6, try tracking through some blood under the rocket and
leaving footprints. Then, after you launch the rocket, the footprints
are still there--hanging in midair.
* If you kill an alien while he is standing under one the the vertically
opening doors, the door will come down and squish the body, and
whenever it opens after that it a stringy bit of flesh gets stretched
between the two halves of the door.
* Get a "shock" by touching the electrical outlet in the arcade in level
1.
* Start a new game. Before descending down the vent, type in DNMONSTERS
and then drop to the street. Grab the Rocket Launcher from the ledge
(you all know where this is by now) and then go to the cinema ticket
window. Stand back (I usually stand in the shadow of the air vent I
came down) and shoot a rocket through the ticket window (use crosshair
if needed). This will blow a hole in the side of the wall. Now go
stand infront of the hole looking into the ticket booth and type
DNMONSTERS This will turn the monsters BACK ON and the lizard who was
originally in there will EXPLODE before your very eyes in a glorious
display of body parts. Its a Kodak moment so keep your finger over the
F12 key to share it with friends.
* Edit the user.con file with a text editor, and you'll see how easy it
is to change weapon strengths, max ammo supplies, and other stuff. A
warning, though: weapon strengths are universal, so if you change the
strength of the shotgun, the Pig Cop's will be just as powerful as
yours.
* (4/14/96 - from Warren Thiele) - Here is a little trick I know of. My
friend found it in a DukeMatch, and it really caught me off guard. Go
in the apartment behind the cinema sign and jump onto the left window
ledge facing out. Duck down and move forward and back, but don't fall
off the ledge. If you do it right you'll end up in the corner of the
arcade beside the Duke Nukem game. Since you can hear your opponent
hit the elevator in the arcade you can time it so that you can blast
him with the RGB without him knowing what hit him. I am running Duke
Nukem 1.1 shareware. I'm not sure if it'll work in other version.
FAQS
1. OK, OK, these are answers, but I think you get the point. :)
2. The registered version will ship on CD-ROM only. There will be no disk
based version.
3. The price of the registered CD-ROM is $39.95..
4. We are very close to signing deals to do Macintosh and Sony
Playstation ports of Duke Nukem 3D. However, please be aware that work
on these will not even begin until the registered version of the DOS
game ships. I wouldn't look for these for awhile, probably not till
1stQ of 1997.
5. Modem and Network play are in shareware.
6. Limit of players in Modem/network is 4 for shareware. Full version
supports 8.
7. Yes, there is Co-Op play.
8. The game requires 8 megs of memory. It will run better with more,
since there's less swapping going on with more memory, and it'll go
faster because of this.
9. The game will run on less than the requirements listed in the
requirements section, but with slowdowns, and feature removals
(reduced screen size, less sounds, etc...). Whether this is playable
or not will be up to you. Please don't write and say "Will the game
run on 'insert system specs'?" It will run, but whether the reduced
amount of features is acceptable is a question we can't answer. Only
you can answer that.
10. You cannot join games in progress. All players have to be there when
the game starts. If you quit, you can't get back in. This will not be
added, as this kind of stuff can't be added to this level of
technology. Our new games like Prey (etc) have this, but Duke does
not.
11. Shareware has have 5 levels and 1 secret level. Episodes 2 & 3 each
have 9 levels, and 2 secret levels for a total of 28 levels over all
three episodes.
12. There are 6 weapons in shareware, and 10 in registered.
13. The weapons in shareware are: Kick (your foot), pistol, shotgun, 3
barrel chaingun, rocket launcher, and pipe bombs.
14. The weapons held out for registered are: Shrinker Weapon (#7),
Devastator Weapon (#8 - a double handed small rocket launcher type of
weapon), Wall Mounted Trip Bomb (#9), and a Freezethrower (#10).
Sorry, but the flamethrower & the laster gun have been scrapped. We
couldn't make them work where we liked it, so it was scrapped.
15. The game does not support any of the 3D video accelerator cards, like
the "3D Blaster", etc..., nor are there any plans to add it.
16. The DukeMatch RemoteRidicule uses the same RTS file format that Rise
of the Triad did, soyou can use your favourite ROTT RTS files with
Duke Nukem 3D!
17. There is no nudity in this game. There are some nicely dressed women,
but no actual nudity. There are parental controls in this game similar
to what was in Rise of the Triad.
18. There are SVGA modes in the game (up to 800x600. Anything beyond that
is insane). We recommend a Pentium to use these modes. (A good one,
with a triple digit processor number of like 133 or above :)
19. VESA VBE compliance is required for SVGA modes. A software driver like
UNIVBE is recommended for these modes if your card does not support it
natively. UNIVBE also helps speed up framerate in the 320x200 mode!
20. The keyboard layout can be reconfigured to anything you want.
21. Yes, there are cheat codes. No there aren't any Dukematch cheat codes.
If you want a list of cheat codes, log on to the 3D Realms Web BBS and
go to the Main Menu. They're there.
22. Yes, you can fall off buildings and hurt or kill yourself (depending
on how high up it is).
23. You cannot see into or out of the water in the game, but you can go in
and out of it. Frame rate would be next to zero if you could see
in/out of the water.
24. Duke Nukem does talk in the game, and you can turn that off if you
want to.
