Hi there, everyone. Sorry for the long silence. Things have been
very ____ around here (I think you know how to fill in the blank
by now).
Have a couple of updates for you and a VERY important request at
the end.
On v1.3..
We're close. The important parts of the sound code were totally
rewritten for stability, especially in net games. Our results
so far have been very promising. However, the GUS code was
totally removed and needs to be rewritten as well. As soon as
we get that finished and Doom tested, we'll send it out. Best
estimate is a couple of weeks. v1.3 also integrates fixes
submitted by y'all to make the serial and net code more compatible
and work faster. There were a couple of savegame bugs fixed and
a minor sky texture mapping bug fixed. It also has a new map
reload feature for the map editor types out there so that you
can test a level immediately after developing it without restarting.
On ports of Doom..
We're currently very ____ with the Jaguar ports of Wolf 3D and
Doom and haven't had time to round out the Linux/X port and other
stuff. The Linux port should be closely followed by an Irix/X
port and later by lots of other ports, but we haven't committed
to release dates because we kinda figured a nasty crunch like
this would come along. I'm afraid that we still can't commit
for the same reason.
On the Jaguar ports..
We're doing Doom and Wolfenstein 3D for the Atari Jaguar. They're
both coming right along. Wolf 3D is sporting several new features,
including source artwork at twice the resolution (4x the data),
a high, fluid refresh rate, 22 kHz sound effects, and MIDI device
emulation. Doom pushes the hardware a lot harder and already
looks trey cool. The anti-aliasing effects of composite screens
coupled with the very hip 16-bit CRY pixel mode makes images look
even more realistic than the DOS version. Both should be done
this summer.
On commercial Doom..
In progress is the development of lotsa new everything for the
commercial Doom release. Will probably be done in September.
We've got some hip new stuff for you like awesome new levels
based on Earth, and several new bad guys, including possessed
humans carrying chain guns, spider daemon offspring, and several
new arch-daemons with extremely creative and grim methods of
destruction. We're paying even closer attention to the design
of good deathmatch levels.
Our VERY important request..
We could use your help. Apparently, there was a game called "GATE
OF DOOM" that came out some time ago. When we applied for a
trademark on "DOOM", they wouldn't give it to us because they
thought the name "DOOM" was too close to the name "GATE OF DOOM"
which has a trademark on it.
Reasoning doesn't work. Apparently, you have to do a petition
to get people to say, "I associate Blammo's LOG! with this rotting
lump of wood my daughter carries on her back everywhere with
'LOG! from Blammo' written all over it." Jay has written up a
lusty e-mail letter to ask for your support. If you've got a
minute, it would help us a lot- thanks!
What follows is from the Mind of Jay..

I agree that the following is a true statement. I consent to the use
of this statement for commercial reasons, or otherwise, by Id
Software, Inc. ("ID"), and further consent to possibly being
contacted in the future with regard to this statement.
I have purchased and/or have played the computer software game
"DOOM", and I understand DOOM was developed by ID. ID has a
reputation of producing high quality computer software games, using
the latest interactive 3-D technology. Based upon advertisements,
trade magazine write-ups and word-of-mouth among my fellow computer
software game players, I recognize DOOM as coming from ID and from no
other source. There is no confusion between DOOM and any other
computer software game which may contain the word "doom" in its
title, including "GATE OF DOOM." DOOM is recognized as the latest
creation from the minds of ID.
