You're being too subtle. See, it only takes two plasma grenades to
destroy the blob-bird generator. Use the third of the three you pick up
to blast the door open after it closes. (Don't worry, it took me a
couple times too.) Or... if you've already gone through the eternal
labrynth, use the winged boots from the minotaurs cave (after, of course,
you cap the minotaur and sacrifice his head in his firepit for the
Force-Axe) you can usually zip in and out with ease.
Something I've heard but can't confirm is that if you learn the
Transmutate power at a high enough level, you can cast a "Mist Form"
spell and move through the gas holes to the second secret level.
However, I haven't found any sages with Transmutate high enough, have you?
BTW, how did you get the antigravity ray before destroying the generator,
I didn't find it till later.
