Hehe.. It was good for a laugh.. I'd agree with the Quake idea,
however. Id should release all pre-releases with a bit of code in there
to wipe Quake from the hard drive, one week after it was installed.
Virii are illegal to release, whether you warn them or not. If they put
this bit of code in there enough times that it would take someone a month
to crack it (the length of time it takes for Quake to get legally
released), then the pre-release will never get released. You can also
cripple the pre-release, so it only has 5 levels, with all the baddies on
them. Or bigger levels, that show everything new, in 3 levels. With no
end, you pull a switch that pops a a message: "Thank you for previewing
Quake! We hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to include screenshots of our
program in your magazine"
I'd download that, and be happy with it. Then, when Quake was legally
released, I'd buy it, and play it, and not know the levels already.
