: I have an AWE32 sound card that is supposed to support General Midi.
: When I run setup and configure to GM and then run doom, I get SoundFX
: (Still configured for SB in SFX) but Sweet FA in the music department.
: When I run Aweutil to configure to General Midi and soak up 40k of
: Conventional memory, and then run doom with the above settings, the machine
: crashes and there endeth the story.
I too have an AWE32 and have come across this problem. The
problem is that Creative Labs in the design of the AWE32 decided it wasn't
cost effective to put a hardware interface for the MPU401 on the card
itself. Instead the give you the AWEUTIL program to redirect the MPU401
codes to the sound card. The problem is the AWEUTIL driver is a real
mode driver and will not work with games that run in protected mode (ie
any games that uses the dos4gw). That explains your lockup, if you want
to get midi with Doom you will have to run the 1.6 beta version of Doom.
It has native support for the AWE32, doom 1.66 will also have AWE support
when it is released. In the meanwhile you will have to live with
Soundblaster Music.
What I have done to solve the problem of the lack of midi support
in the many games was to purchase a Waveblaster. This daughterboard card
gives you some extra voices and has a 4 Meg wavetable ROM built on.
Unlike the AWE this card interprets the MPU401 signals at a hardware level
and doesn't require any device drivers. The sound quality from the
wavetable isn't quite as good as the AWE's wavetable, but its real close
and you don't have to screw with device drivers. These two cards make the
ulitmate in listening enjoyment.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. BTW: the
waveblaster goes for about $200 on the open market. You might want to
look into it if you want MIDI compatability with older games. Otherwise
just hang in there, most of the new games are coming out with native
support for the AWE, which means no more over sized TSR that some of us
just don't have room to run. Good luck to you.
