Just figured I'd add in my 2 cents on this whole issue. To begin with, I'm
a venerable old player of Doom 1.2 and proud of it. Hell, only recently did
a couple of my friends manage to get 2 player serial doom to work. We love it.
As to the whole piracy situation. First of all, piracy has been around forever.
It's not like Doom is the first great game/program to be pirated. Second of
all, the situation is definitely overblown. Pirates will always have early
versions (even complete ones). Also, everyone has copied a game from someone
before, so none of us is innocent. When we were kids, we didn't have money.
We copied games. That same generation has now created a huge market now that
we are older. I actually don't mind paying for cool games. It makes it
hassle free, and to all those guys who complain that they don't have a Ferrari,
and can't afford games, well if you can afford a computer powerful enough to
play Doom, you can afford doom. Simple as that. People will buy the game, and
all the piracy scandals in the world aren't going to shock anyone. I'd say
most of us have been around long enough to see our share of copied games.
