Thanks to all who won't buy Doom II and use their pirate copy instead!
You are really smart! You know what? I have the feeling that Quake
will be copy-protected, with encrypted files, etc. This means that all
users will have to be bothered with codes (to be found in the manual) or
other copy-protection schemes. Great!
And (this is the most important part IMHO), there might never be any
Quake editor, because the file format will use multiple levels of
encryption and checksums, etc. Do you think that id Software will take
the risks to be pirated once again? No. They will protect their next
program (Quake) as much as they can, and we will all loose!
The worst thing is that it probably won't stop pirates, who will
distribute a copy of the manual, or a list of codes, or whatever, with
their illegal copy of the program. This will just harm people who are
currently having fun with Doom (registered copies _and_ illegal copies,
because Doom 1 was pirated too) and with the Doom editors. Maybe there
will never be anything like that again.
I read in a paper (official study) that more than 50% of the programs
currently in use in the world are illegal copies (this goes up to 95% in
South America and some parts of Asia). There is no excuse for that, but
at least I can understand why (money). But now, not only do we see
morons who make illegal copies of a program, but they are proud of it!
If have two reasons to be angry (or really sad, for that matter): first,
people are pirating Doom (and don't tell me that you will buy it when it
is available, because in most cases this is not true!); second, they post
messages about it, to make sure that id Software will be pissed off!
Even if I had an illegal copy of Doom II (I don't, trust me), I wouldn't
post messages about it. Oh, people are soooo stupid!
Now, if YOU have an illegal copy of Doom II, do this:
- Fill in an order form for Doom II and send it to GT.
- Delete the files from your hard drive and your floppies, then wait for
your registered copy to be delivered in your mailbox.
- If you downloaded Doom II from a BBS or an ftp server, report this address
to the SPA. Or if the admin is innocent and didn't know about these files,
ask him to delete them as soon as possible and to look in his log files for
the name of the guy who uploaded this. Yes, most BBSes keep log files and
are able to know who uploaded or downloaded the pirate files...
- If you know other people who have Doom II, tell them to do the same.
- And last but not least: shut up!
Sorry about all this net.cops stuff, but I'm having fun with Doom and I
like to be able to create new levels, etc. I would like to be able to do
it with Quake, too.
Even if people are pirating Doom II, id Software will still get lots of
money out of it. Well, we all know it's a great game... And they will
probably release Quake, no matter how many copies of Doom II are sold.
But if they have the felling that too many pirates are using their software
without paying for it, they will certainly change their mind about the nice
"open" format for the maps in the game and add a copy-protection in the
program. What does this mean? We all loose!
