()=== Dealing with "Doom Sucks" and "Make.Money.Fast" ===()
Occasionally, a post having one or more of these characteristics will
appear in your favorite newsgroup:
[A] Makes insulting or vulgar comments about the newsgroup's topic
or is otherwise lacking in civility.
[B] Is off-topic (not related to the newsgroup's area of interest).
For example, money-making schemes like MAKE.MONEY.FAST, or ads
like Canter & Siegel's "Green Card Lawyer" advertisements).
[C] Has many unrelated newsgroups listed in the Newsgroups: line.
The term 'spamming' refers to the practice of posting an off-topic
article to many, many newsgroups, either by cross-posting (multiple
newsgroups on the Newsgroups: line) or by posting separate copies
to the targeted newsgroups.
You may be tempted to respond in some fashion to the above-described
situations. In most cases, your response will be counterproductive.
If you encounter this type of post, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to:
[1] Ignore it. If you cannot restrain yourself, then...
[2] Do NOT mailbomb the sender. He/She may be innocent because...
[2a] The posting was forged (difficult, but doable, unfortunately).
If you are not an expert at interpreting news/mail headers,
you may miss vital clues that indicate forgeries or other
malicious/mischevious activity. Don't act in haste.
[2b] The terminal was left logged in and was used by someone else.
[2c] Their password was illegally/improperly obtained and used.
[3] Do NOT post an inflammatory follow-up. In particular...
[3a] Do NOT recommend mailbombing the sender. See [2] above.
[3b] Do NOT post indignant messages. Everyone's upset as you are.
Flames waste everyone's time and take up valuable disk space.
[3c] If possible, don't follow-up at all! (Well, if it's funny, OK).
[3d] Wait for a follow-up post by a news administrator or other
old far^H^H^Hhat announcing what steps have been taken and/or
explaining the evidence that the post was forged (for example).
[4] Do NOT send inappropriate mail to inappropriate locations.
[4a] If you've been reading news for less than a year, there are
other vastly more experienced users that will deal with the
problem. They've seen the post, too. Let them handle it.
[4b] The system administrators on the offender's system may get
bogged down with too many messages or their system may be
overloaded with ping storms or mailbombs - give 'em a chance
to deal with the original problem.
[4c] Do not send to 'root@user.site.name'. It may not even be the
right site. See [2a] above. Let the experts deal with it.
[4d] Mail to postmaster@user.site.name if a serious violation occurs
and you are *ABSOLUTELY SURE* that it is not a forgery.
Thank you for your co-operation.
