Going back to the DOCS, it indicates that the dimensional gateways became
uncontrollable and the creatures came through. Some might argue, I suppose,
that they reached into the netherworld and have brought back "hellspawn
critters". Since ID chose not to define the scenerio, we can make up our
own background and it may (for some) involve religious aspects (such as
demonology). I guess the Enterprise once travelled to meet GOD, so if you
want to believe that scientists could accidentally create a dimensional
gateway to hell then that could be a part of your DOOM scenerio. I'm not
sure the guys at ID wanted to carry it that far, but then again they didn't
really want to carry it anywhere.
