Then you should try again! There is at least an easy way, a hard way and a
nightmare way to do it... (with rocket, of course)
Easy way: find the cyberdemon, go to the far end and shoot at it, and at
once sidestep to avoid geting hitted by rockets.
Difficult way: find the cyberdemon, and hide yourselve behind any column.
Wait until it appear, fire it and sidestep. (i.e. circle and
sway)
Nightmare way: find the cyberdemon, depress (i.e. press and do not release)
the fire key while sidestep circling around to avoid hitted by
rocket. (i.e. direct encounter)
I've never succeed in the third way -- a few rounds is okay, but I soon get
tired and find the whole screen red...

I believe, in your description, the rooms are all in E3M9, i.e. the secret
level. This is the next level of E3M6, and you need to play with the rocket to
get there. This hint is real big enough -- bounce yourselve into the room
containing a switch which you can see but can't touch...
