" This must have been a VERY old verison of the game. The actual
game... which they showed at the MacWorld Expo in Boston at the begining
of August... was the 640x480 16bit color version which is what Marathon
is. "
Please nopte that what was shown at MacWorld was *not* the final version
of the game, apparently. It's still going through some revs right now, so
the final product will likely an improvement over what was shown at
MacWorld.
" Again... must have been a VERY VERY old version. The graphics in
the current version are detailed right down to the tinniest burn marks on
the walls. "
Actually, he may be right here. Marathon is extremely configurable, which
means it should run OK even on slower Macs. You do this by dropping the
resolution to something comparable to DOOM's. To jack up the rez beyond
that and still get decent frame rate, you need a faster Mac ('040 or
PowerMac).
" You sure you didnt see Sensory Overload by mistake.... you are
describing it to a Tee. Marathons ability to look up, down, left, or
right
was created for use with Virtual Reality headgear, but you can use it with
the keyboard or joystick too. Its very smooth, and very well done!"
I kinda agree with you here. It sure sounds like a description of SO,
which I agree isn't close to DOOM. Not so much technically, but more
because gameplay and setting isn't as good. With their current graphic
engine, Reality Bites could easily create a DOOM knockoff, especially as
it seems the data structures they're using wouldn't be too hard to hack.
