Yes, it's nice to finally have site to get updates! :-)

Complete and utter CRAP! You don't need the ASP chip at all for anything! The
ASP chip is strickly for better compression of sound files WHEN recording!!!
Doom does NOT make use of it and lack of having one does NOT slow anything down
in Doom! Also you can record sounds just fine without the ASP. You just won't
get as small of a file as when you DO have an ASP chip. Enough crap, if anyone
wants more (accurate) info, continue the discussion in one of the "souncard"
groups please...

Many people are buying these "empty" cards and are quite happy with them!
Even GUS users buy them to get Soundblaster compatiblity and then use the
GUS for great music and the rest. I think getting an inexpensive Soundblaster
(plain, Pro or 16) and then getting a separate GM Midi card is a great way to
go. Whether SB16+WB or GUS+SB, etc., etc., you will get great sound and music
for the best investment of $$$. I am happy with my SB16MCD+WB but I know there
are other and better setups. The advantage I have with the Waveblaster is that
I can use it on plain programs that don't directly support it. Some Midi cards
will only work with programs that directly support them - not a good idea.
More info on this kind of stuff is posted in the "sondcard" groups, but it is
nice of ID the attempt to give so much effort to support so many different
sound cards in Doom (although it seems to be the biggest reason for delays of
upgrades...).
Sorry to ramble on here but one final thing when getting a soundcard that you
want to use for Doom... Get one that will give you STEREO sounds! You need it
to know which direction the baddies are coming from!!! :-)
