I've had moderate success with the Ensoniq Soundscape card (shipping with all
newer Gateway2000 models). If the default .bat file doesn't work, try
running the FM.BAT file before running Doom.
Certainly doesn't work as well as my Soundblaster cards, but it's plenty
workable. Hope the other .bat file helps.
