  12. Just a few days ago, after working 18-hour days over the weekend then
  13. working nearly a 30-hour shift, I jumped into the ol' newsgroups and
  14. flamed
  15. the Hell out of college students and liberals.  There are no excuses, but
  16. let
  17. me direct my feelings in a more understandable way.

  19. First of all, while my opinions DO happen to match those of my employees,
  20. they do not necessarily reflect the attitude of APCi.  We have spent hours
  21. and dollars to the tune of several thousand of each developing and testing
  22. one of the most anxiously awaited products to enter the online services
  23. industry.  Nonetheless, there are still those people out there in
  24. somewhere
  25. in cyberland who would rather bitch and moan and rant and rave then
  26. comment and compliment.  We have spent way too many hours online
  27. and on our 1-800 line re-reading the help documentation to users who
  28. refused to do it themselves.  And all over FREEWARE!
  29.  
  30. Most of the reason that I was up for nearly 30 hours that day was because
  31. of idiots, mostly college students, who had the gall to call and complain
  32. because they couldn't play at 2400, or because we didn't have a 1-800 line
  33. to our BBS / test site, or because they couldn't get the "cheats" to work
  34. while in network DOOM, or because they can't get their patched WAD files
  35. to work (trying to get tons of weapons in E1M1 at startup), and the stupid
  36. list goes on and on.  I guess the thing that really pissed me off was that
  37. ALL of these topics and more are covered in the help or in really large
  38. lettering on our BBS menus.

  40. Next, I decided to jump into IRC #DOOM to tell players about the test
  41. site.
  42. I was immediately flamed once again because the call to our BBS is long
  43. distance!  Then I was asked what the price of the server software would
  44. be, and when I told them that I did not know as of yet, I was very
  45. promptly
  46. informed that..."it [the APCiMPGS] had damn well better be f**king free,
  47. because you [APCi] have no g**damn right to charge anyone to play net
  48. DOOM."  These winners were all college students.  The same ones
  49. that post in this newsgroup saying that DOOM should be FREEWARE.
  50. The same ones that post in this newsgroup that are offended because
  51. the guys at id Software drive exotic sports cars.

  53. Well, that's how it all happened.  I've learned to avoid email altogether
  54. after
  55. a long shift, and especially after such negative experiences.  If I
  56. offended
  57. you, I hope you are one of the jerks that had it coming!  If you aren't,
  58. then
  59. I apologize very sincerely.  If you still don't want to use APCi FREEWARE
  60. in rebellious response, I still believe it to be your unfortunate loss.

  62. If I ever flame in this group again, it will be very carefully directed.

  64. then, if I offend the wrong people, I will quickly apologize.  However,
  65. don't
  66. expect me to cut one inch of slack to the idiots and freeloaders who are
  67. constantly looking for ways to screw those of us who are working hard to
  68. make the world a great place to be.
