I concur, this is an excellent episode, quite higher in quality
than most that Ive seen. I try also to keep up on the new WADS
on infant2, and this by far outshines most of them. Some reasons
why this is worth the time to download:
Excellent construction. Seems to be somewhat of a theme, if
not across the entire episode, than within the levels themselves.
Some interesting constructs that I havent seen or thought of.
I must admit, that while playing this level, I am not
concentrating on the walls, and such, but seems to be lacking
the dreaded HOM, and textures look to have gotten a higher
attention in detail than some, in that the textures align,
and sector lighting works nicely.
Its also rather fast, at least as fast as Knee Deep in the
Dea. Need I mention those WADs that are so damned large, they
bring my VLB 486/66 to its knees?
Game play is rather tough. I play at UV, as well should any Doomer,
and its not easy. Not the case of 'how many monsters can I throw
in here', but enough to keep the blood pumping without losing
interest, or total frustration. Ammo is not as abundant as I
would prefer, which forces me into a budgetary mode on ammo
(use the chainsaw on the demons rather than just filling them
full of shotgun lead). Seems to be plenty of health items
about.
I try to measure a levels fairness vs. toughness by
warping directly to a level, and completing it. Anyone
can finish E1M8 once your loaded down with all 5 weapons
E1 offers, but can you warp directly to E1M7 and complete
it without cheating? I tried M4 of RETURN to see, and damned
if it aint easy. A chain gun, sparse ammo, and those damned
misquito-like flying skulls.
One complaint, is that some of the puzzles are a pain in the
ass. Without spoiling it, there is a level where you must get
to what you naturally assume to be the end, only to pick
up a keycard, and go back where you came from..
All in all, its quite good, and can compare with the original
Id levels.
