OK gang. It is possible (easy) to build a registered IWAD for 1.6. Here's
how:
I used DEU521GCC, a hex editor, the 1.2r DOOM.WAD, 15REGV2.ZIP, and
DOOM16BT.ZIP
BEFORE YOU DO THIS: If you read through this and dont understand any of
this, DON'T DO ANYTHING. Wait for the official patch from iD. THIS IS NOT
OFFICIAL INFORMATION FROM iD! THIS IS NOT FROM iD AT ALL! If you trash
your files, neither iD nor I nor the makers of these utilities will
assume any responsibility. Back up your files before you start.
1.) Start with a registered 1.2 DOOM.WAD (i.e. Pay For DOOM!)
2.) Get 15RegV2.ZIP from infant2 or some other site. Run this. Give
credit where credit is due. This program uses the WAD elements from 1.5
beta to patch the 1.2 WAD to 1.5. Notice the demo will not work because
it is a 1.5 demo.
3.) Extract DEMO1, DEMO2, and DEMO3 from the 1.6bt DOOM1.WAD. I used a
hex editor, changed the first byte of DOOM1.WAD from "I" to "P" (to trick
DEU into treating it like a patch wad), loaded DEU, loaded the modified
DOOM1.WAD, and extracted these three items to wads. I used the "Save"
command (i have not had good lick with the Xtract command) like this:
S DEMO1 DEMO1.WAD
Deu :) this with DEMO2 and DEMO3 also.
4.) Re-Run DEU, but set DEU.CFG so it loads the 1.5 modified DOOM.WAD as
the main DOOM.WAD. Use "R" (read) to load DEMO1.WAD, DEMO2.WAD, and
DEMO3.WAD. Last but not least, use "B DOOM_16.WAD" to build a main wad file.
5.) Rename DOOM_16.WAD to DOOM.WAD and put it in your DOOM 1.6 directory.
I know this is pretty basic, but the only differece between the 1.5
patched registered wad and an at least functional 1.6 WAD was that the
DEMOs are tagged with a different version. I haven't checked the format
of the .LMPs, but it is probably just a byte or two that contains the
version number. This .WAD works just fine for the registered levels,
deathmatch, etc.
Be young, have fun, play DooM.
