Yes, I often use stereo to locate things. As you rotate you can
detect the direction of the sound source. In deathmatches this can be quite
important, like when someone picks up the chainsaw.

Without sound you have no warning that there's a critter nearby about
to attach, and there are many mechanical noises that provide clues
to help find secret doors, elevators, etc.
SB16 Pros are about $80 these days - hard to get much cheaper than that
and still get stereo.
