I would agree that this the case for 99% of games. I also tend to think that
doom is a landmark game. However I have had X-com for about 1 month and I
have just as much interest in it now as I did when I bought it, maybe more.
In my free time now I pretty much play basketball (real basketball) or Xcom.
This games is just tough enough and just rewarding enough and just frustrating
enough to keep me enthralled. Doom didn't do that. Xwing pretty much did it.
I think I liked Xwing better than X-com but I can't say why. If your hard
drive only had X-com, Doom and Tie Fighter on it you wouldn't be missing much.
I think one of the reasons that these games develop such a following is that
they are so few and far between. When only 3 or 4 really special games come
out a year it (and Dooms year is almost up) people have a lot more interest in
them. But I digress, I guess my point is that doom is a wonderful game,
mostly for it's ability to play with friends. I can have fun with my friends
with out having to turn on my computer very easily. That's not a flame. I
just think it's more impressive that Xcom lets me have fun with my computer
without my friends.
Flame away.
