Its fun.
If you don't have access to a local network you might want to try this.
It is quite easy to make a serial cable bye oneself. Try it out. And
its much cheaper.
parts: 2 x female 9-pin connector, 5 x wires (say about 10 meters/30 feet)
connect wires on both connectors as follows:
1-4 (from one on the same connector to four on the same)
4-6 (from four on the same connector to six on the same)
2-3 (from two on 1st connector to three on 2nd)
3-2 (same as above)
5-5 (same as above) (signal ground)
7-8 (same as above)
8-7 (same as above)
don't blame me if something goes wrong. :-/
It works fine on my computer.
I've also tried making a 25-pin serial cable but I haven't got it working
could somebody tell me which pins I should connect to which.
AND DON'T BLAME ME!
