There is an FAQ for Doom. Try ftping to infant2.sphs.indiana.edu and going
into directory /pub/doom/text/faqs. It's usually called something like
dmfaq57.txt

Doom 1.2 you have. Doom 1.3 never came out and I'm not too sure why
(something to do with Id not wanting to confuse it with 1.3 of something
else I think). Doom 1.4 only ever came out in beta test release (i.e.: not
fully tested and with a few bugs) and was never intended for general
release. I think v1.5 is supposed to be a general release version out about
now (maybe try infant2.sphs.indiana.edu or ftp.uwp.edu/pub/games/id/doom).
I think there will almost certainly be a patch to upgrade v1.2 to v1.5 but
not having seen it, I can't say for sure.

What you do is type in "idclev" (without the quote marks) during a game.
You then type in the number of the mission you want to go to and then the
number of the episode that you want to go to e.g.: typing "idclev36" (again
minus quotes) would take you to Mt. Erebus (E3M6) on an unaltered Doom.
Cheers,
Chris.
