I got both my TB Rio and my CL SB 16 SCSI-2 ASP soundcards this week.
Installation was smooth after I found that I had my tape controller set
for the same DMA channel as the SB 16's 16 bit DMA channel. Solution,
move the tape controller DMA to channel 6. The only other problem that
I had was that after running the Windows install program for the SB 16,
I restarted Windows and the hourglass never went away. I figured out
that this was due to the sb16fm.drv MIDI entry in my system.ini file.
Solution, comment out the line. Who wants FM MIDI with a Rio
installed? :-) Seems that the FM synth is still available because I
selected something like "all SB MIDI synths" from the MIDI mapper and
it sounded sour, as if FM were being mixed in with the Rio's synth.
An addendum to the Rio manual states that the SB 16 SCSI/SB 16 ASP sound
cards do not receive MIDI in data from the WaveBlaster port, and suggests
a solution to the "problem". I installed the card the way TB suggests
without the "solution" and it seems to work, but it seems to me that I'd
be losing some "input" from RIO if I continue to operate this way. The
"solution" that TB suggests is to obtain the latest SB AWE 32 Windows
MIDI drivers and install them and use them instead of the standard SB 16
Windows MIDI drivers. They suggest getting them from CL's BBS. The
only place I was able to find the driver was in the SB AWE 32 Developer's
kit. Since the kit did not come with the setup program for Windows, nor
an "oemsetup.inf" file, the only way to install the SBAWE32.DRV file was,
apparently, by adding a line in the system.ini file "MIDI2=SBAWE32.DRV"
and place the driver in the Windows "system" directory. When I restarted
Windows, I got a message that said "SB AWE 32 MIDI synth not found. Run
the sb config applet." Well, I figure that there is some other entry that
needs to be made in my system.ini file. I called TB and they assured me
that the configuration works. The main difference between what I did and
what TB did was that TB ran the AWE 32 setup program. Anyone out there
have any tips on how to get this combination to work?
Anyway, the combination sounds great. DOOM is phenomenial!!!! When I
select the 16 bit DMA channel in DOOM, the sound effects are in stereo
and also sound 3 dimensional (OOOOHHHH Gee, the Imp's shot landed to my
left on screen and I heard it out of the Left channel and it sounds
like there's something behind me - there is :-)). Selecting the 8 bit
DMA channel for the SB produces mono effects. The general MIDI
selection for the music card in DOOM works well with the Rio and, of
course, the Rio produces great sounding instruments.
Trying the combination with Strike Commander, I could not get the
general MIDI selection for the music card to work. I selected the
WaveBlaster entry for the music card and that worked fine. However, I
was browsing the CL FTP site and found a file for games that won't work
with the GMIDI setting. I installed the patch, selected the GMIDI
setting for SC, and ran SC - Everything worked fine. The music in SC
sounds great with the Rio.
Though I have not heard many sound cards, (I'm also an Aria based
soundcard owner) I think the Rio sounds great. My reason for getting
the SB 16 was, of course, to maintain a high level of game
compatibility. :-) I think the Rio sounds much better than the Aria
based card I own. I've heard a friend's GUS, but without hearing it
side by side with the Rio, I can't make any comment on which sounds
better. Theoretically, with the Rio having its sample set resident in
ROM (4 Meg uncompressed), it should sound better than GUS.
The SCSI controller works with no problems with my Toshiba 3401 CD-ROM
drive, and I think it performs slightly better than the controller on
the Aria card. I did not take notes on the benchmark results with the
Aria card, so I really can't say. The card came with the Adaptec
EZ-SCSI (EZ-SCSI now comes with a simple Windows based Audio CD Player
it did not come with that when I got the Aria card). There is an update
file available of the Creative BBS and FTP site to bring EZ-SCSI up to
the current rev.
