This posting, and the next posting, are some mini-reviews of some
more-or-less recent PWADs. All of the are for the registered form of
DOOM. All of them are available on infant2.sphs.indiana.edu. I
played them all through to the finish on a least two difficulty
settings. If any author has a PWAD that they would like reviewed in
this fashion, send me e-mail and I'll give it a try!
The categories are as follows:
Name: The author's name for the mission or missions.
Type: New mission or rework of some other mission
Episodes: which Doom episodes this Pwad replaces
Author: The name of the author
Overall Rating: my personal appraisal of how good
this mission is. To give you an
idea of my scale, most of the original
ID levels would rate "very good", and
a few would rate "excellent".
Mission Scenario: The background, locale, or flavor of the
mission, usually from the author's .TXT
file.
Mission Map Size: size of the mission. To give you an
idea of the scale here, E1M1 would be
small, E2M7 would be large. Anything
larger than the largest ID levels would
be called very large.
Difficulty: How difficult it was to finish the level
with >80% kills, items, secret, on HMP
setting. The hardest of ID's levels
would rate as "difficult".
Construction Quality: This refers to the map layout,
and also to the choice and placement
of textures, handling of doors & lifts,
quality of new textures if any, and
number and severity of bugs.
Notes: These are feelings I jotted down while reviewing
the PWAD. The very most subjective
stuff is here.
So, without further ado - here are the first two reviews.
Caution - personal opinions follow...
------------DOOM PWAD Mini-review: NEMO -------------------
Name: Nemo
Type: New mission from scratch
Episode: E1M1
Author: Bill Bessette
Overall Rating: very good
Mission Scenario: Clean out an underground base & marina
Mission Map Size(s): medium
Difficulty (in HMP): medium
Construction Quality: very good
Notes:
Beginning of first level somewhat tough, with lots
of Impt fire from two sides, and little ammo. Slog thru
that, and the rest is about average difficulty. Music
from Terminator2 sets a somber but urgent mood. Overall
map structure is good, the ships at the underground docks
are really nice. Plenty of good and nasty surprises,
with a fair number of demons well placed.
Almost no HOM effect observed, but one time playing I
managed to screw up the ending and it was impossible to
finish. Never duplicated the problem so it's nothing
to worry about. Very little slowdown observed on a
486DX-33.
Overall, a nice job and well worth playing. Be thrifty
on your ammo!

------------DOOM PWAD Mini-review: TREE3 -------------------
Name: TREE3
Type: New mission from scratch
Episodes: E1M1 - E1M3
Author: Greg Lewis
Overall Rating: excellent
Mission Scenario: Base set in the hills on phobos; clean
out the base (three parts).
Mission Map Size(s): medium - large
Difficulty (in HMP): difficult
Construction Quality: excellent
Notes:
Beginning of first mission in this series is
quite difficult, with blind jumps and little in the
way of bonuses. The rest of the first mission stays
difficult, with an interesting maze-like deal and
lots of switches. Fairly good use of secret areas.
Nice use of lighting in some places, and some new
sound. This PWAD includes a couple of new textures,
too. The ending is pretty cool. Some nice use
of decorations, too.
Some of the secret areas were challenging
to find. Usually worth the effort, though.
No HOM effects observed. I was
never able to finish this on UV, just on HMP and
NTR. Overall, I think this is a great PWAD for an
experienced player who doesn't mind some
challenging surprises and close-quarters fighting.
