Cheating??!? Barry, for some of us it's just plain SURVIVAL. Gamma
correction is there to correct for the BRIGHTNESS variations from one
monitor to another (believe it or not, some CRTs are inherently brighter
than others). Back when DOOM first came out (and before it had Gamma
Correction), one of my officemates used to be able to see things on his
monitor that NO ONE ELSE IN THE OFFICE COULD. His monitor was newest.
Could be coincidence, could be that as phosphors age they lose some of
their light generation ability, I don't know. The point is, even with
GC at max, on my monitor a dark room in DOOM is REALLY dark. Maybe
someday I'll be able to convince my boss to buy me a new monitor (yeah,
boss, I need a new monitor an oh since you're getting me stuff why not
pick up a Pentium 90 also?) but in the meantime GC is not cheating, it
merely helps to level the playing field.
