  14.         GUIDELINES  FOR  POSTING  BINARY  FILES  TO  ALT.GAMES.DOOM

  17.   The alt.games.doom newsgroup is first and foremost a DISCUSSION newsgroup.
  18.  
  19.   The vast majority of users can retrieve binaries through ftp or ftpmail 
  20.   servers and don't need binaries to be posted here.  A single uuencoded 
  21.   binary easily takes up as much space as 20 or more discussion articles.

  23.   Many sites have to support netnews with limited resources and can't 
  24.   afford to carry the binaries groups; these sites shouldn't have to cut 
  25.   themselves off from the information here or expire this group at a 
  26.   greater rate just because a small number of people don't have FTP access.

  28.   Also, bear in mind that there are people with serial links or who PAY
  29.   per minute or per kilobyte.  They suffer when large posts appear here.

  31.   The alt.binaries.doom newsgroup is available for posting large binaries.
  32.   If your news server carries the alt.games.doom newsgroup, but does not 
  33.   carry alt.binaries.doom, send a polite request to the news administrator
  34.   to carry the group.  They are much more likely to carry groups that
  35.   have demand (readers) - so make your wishes known.

  37.   Unfortunately, some news servers won't carry alt.binaries.doom due to 
  38.   the large amount of disk space required - a fate WE would like to avoid!

  40.   An alternative newsgroup for posting binaries is alt.binaries.misc, 
  41.   which probably gets wider distribution than alt.binaries.doom.

  43.   Here are the (proposed) guidelines for posting binaries to alt.games.doom:

  45.     [1] NO HUMUNGOUS POSTINGS - If the uuencoded file (or the sum of the 
  46.         pieces) is more than 60K, do not even THINK of posting it to a 
  47.         discussion newsgroup!  Post it to alt.binaries.doom, or some 
  48.         other binaries group, and then announce it in alt.games.doom.

  50.     [2] NO LARGE POSTINGS - If the uuencoded file is between 30 and 60K,
  51.         think twice before posting - is it REALLY worthwhile?

  53.     [3] ZIP BINARIES BEFORE UUENCODING - Use PKZIP v2.04g. It is available
  54.         by FTP from oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/zip/pkz204g.exe.  The R.E.M
  55.         UUENCODE/UUDECODE v5.25 is /pub/msdos/decode/uuexe525.exe.

  57.     [4] CROSS-POST TO ALT.BINARIES.DOOM - That's where it belongs, anyway.
