The AWE-32 is not a 32-bit card, nor does it do 32-bit music. "32" refers
to the number of simultaneous voices it can play. The AWE is not an entirely
new card -- it's basically a combination of the SB16 + ASP + MCD + EMU-9000 +
expandable RAM bank + (reputedly) quieter circuitry + microphone + more
software.
This means that if you have an AWE-32, you can make the card do SB 2.0 and
SB-16 natively without the EMU MIDI. Or, you can let the card handle digitized
sound in SB or SB16 mode, while sending music thru GM/GS/MT-32 emulation, *or*
generate the whole kit'n'kaboodle thru native AWE support (which is much
better exemplified in Arena and Tie Fighter than Doom 1.4, incidentally).
