Notes on the new Israeli Mob File
=================================
This mob is based on the mob04 that came with the SP2 patch.
Remember in this army, its coded so the armoured units get 10 odds
experience points added for free. At the default experience of 70
you therefore get mostly veterans, and at 75 you get a fair few
lites. - Hence explaining a bit why the included arab Israeli
campaign is about the easiest!.
Prior to about 1960 the Israeli army was mostly infantry, and foot
infantry at that. early on lash-up APCs were used, basically trucks
with applique steel plating. Armour was a few ex-WW2 tank cos, in
the 40s a few ex-French Renaults were used!.
By the mid 60s they Had a reasonable quantity of tanks, and in fact
by the yom Kippur war they had gone to an almost pure tank organisation,
literally often only one mech company per armoured brigade, and were low
on built-in artillery support too.
The appearance of sagger etc in that war reintroduced a more balanced
force structure, together with an interest in plenty of extra MGs to
help supress the ATGM gunners. Israeli APCs and the mech squads have
also a heavy dose of Mgs to support the tanks vs RPG and sagger teams,
relying on the tanks for AT work.
Israel does not seem to rate the ATGM as a weapon, they themselves do
not have large numbers of same, and seem to use it only as a specialist
weapon in small numbers for those occasions it is useful.
Throughout the period they maintained a core of elite infantry - the
paras. Used for rear area raiding as well as close combat assault troops
in city fighting etc, these are more likely to go into combat on thier
hind legs or in helos than to use silk.
NB - some of the new infantry below may have Uzi SMG where Sten should be.
It wasnt worth the extra troop type for the brief usage of Sten.
Formations
==========
HQ
--
Is now a tank and an FO vehicle. Other compulsory FO vehicles deleted.
Mech Inf Pl
-----------
Now 4 plain APC, 4 squads, 2 AT wpns, now usually Dragon, but as often
Gustavs.
Paras
-----
Are now full sized squads, those in jeeps are now scout squads.
SPAA PLt
--------
Added 4 SPAA gun platoon (2 sections).
Off-map arty
------------
An FO vehicle and 2 sections, buyable at all times. Dont use
auto deploy with these, as occasionally the routine deploys
M1 icons on-table for the sections.
Air Strike
----------
Fo vehicle controlling a flight of 4 strike aircraft, buyable
at all times. A/C are not upgradeable in campaign core.
Air lift
--------
Mixed transport and gunship helos to provide airmobility
for paras etc. Purchaseable at all times, so you can have
a para core in campaigns with helo lift from the outset.
Weapons
=======
Added a 7.62 FN AAMG (2) for later tanks with all those mgs.
UNITS
=====
Some with British style SD have 2 salvos. Some later tanks
and APC with a 52mm or 60mm mortar carried have more sd
salvos to represent the smoke mortar.
Centurions
----------
Armour upgraded as per the British list. Cent (152mm on heavier
later models as basis) was underarmoured vs pattons (120mm basis),
and did not reflect thier ability to take more punishment.
I considered putting Chieftain in, as a what - if. Israel was on
line for Cheiftain, until the Arab pressure put the UK and France
off supplying Israel. Hence the Pattons Israel took because they HAD
to, not for any technical reasons. They at least became useful MBTs
after the Israelis put a lot of effort into them, eg replacing the
original hydraulic fluid which would sometimes catch fire if the lines
were breached, removing the silly commanders mini-turrets etc. Most of
the improvements leading up to the A3 M60 were due to Israeli combat
experience, US tank design at the time being in the doldrums due to
Vietnam.
Centurions remained popular in certain rocky desert areas since thier
rugged suspension could handle it, but the more delicate US tanks would
break down. Merkavas suspension arrangement is more akin to Centurions.
Isherman 51B
------------
Some were rearmed with 20 Pdr guns as these were removed from Cents
being upgraded to 105mm. It was actually a bit too much gun for the
Sherman - the French gun despite being 105mm, was a medium pressure
HEAT thrower, hence low enough recoil. Ammo loadout is a guess at
40 rounds equally split, and speed is slightly down.
Multi-Mg tanks
--------------
The .50 cal here is actually mounted above the 105mm gun barrel and
remotely triggered - it is an extra co-ax, not an AAMG. 2 7.62 AAMG
are carried, hence the new weapon type 7.62 FN AAMG (2), due to SPs
limitation of 4 weapon slots. Many of these later tanks have a 60mm
mortar roof mounted, for smoke and illumination, so I increased the
sd allocation to represent the smoke mortar.
The Soviet Captures
------------------
Were too overpriced, so cost down a bit. I still would not bother
with them much though!.
120mm Merkavas
--------------
Now have some HE capability.
Added a later M3 with sabot at extra cost.
160mm SP mortar
---------------
An open topped Sherman chassis with a 160mm mortar.
Used the L 33 graphic as nearest.
M113 ITOW
---------
Later model AT vehicle, ITOW and TI.
RAM V1
------
As utility vehicle, armoured jeep with mg.
As Armoured car, with 12.7 and 7.62 mgs
M113 UG and UGs
---------------
Later M113 with added spaced armour, and the scout variant.
Puma PAC
--------
This is the centurion APC, I had to use the normal
centurion graphic - it has NO turret OK?. Used mainly
for patrolling, or sometimes in assaults.
Improvised APC
--------------
This is an armoured truck with bren gun, for the early
period, and it also helps the AI which tried to buy APC
companies before 60, so I also added an early mech squad.
(the AI bought M3 halftracks and the bazookas only).
Gunships
--------
Missiles moved up to slot 1, and salvoed in most cases.
Cannon and rockets moved to bottom of weapons list. Any
with RP, all in 1 slot now.
Aircraft
--------
68mm NATO rockets used - same rocket in fact as 70mm, but
the USA measure launcher diameter, everyone else the rocket.
In SP2, the 68mm is a better AP round, less HE, 70mm is better
HE, less AP - so 70mm best for gunships. Also increased rocket
count to reflect 32 round rocket cans.
Scout Teams
------------
Now in the recce units, para jeep recon etc, so the
para squads dont have to be titches to fit these any more.
FO vehicles
-----------
An earlier M3 FO vehicle for 50-60s.
Middle one has IR sights now.
A later M113 FO added with GSR (60 vision).
