  33.      What is Guest?
  34.      
  35.      Guest is a portable driver program that lets you use an
  36.      external Zip or Jaz drive on a computer without having to
  37.      permanently install the Iomega driver or Tools software. 
  38.      There are versions of Guest for both Macintosh and PC
  39.      systems.  Guest for IBM-compatible PC's running Windows 3.1
  40.      and/or DOS is described here.  If you want to use your drive
  41.      on a PC running Windows 95 or on a Macintosh, refer to the
  42.      section on "Using Guest on Other Systems" later in this
  43.      file.

  45.      When you run GUEST.EXE, the Guest driver loads into the
  46.      computer's memory and stays there until the computer is
  47.      rebooted.  While Guest is in memory, it tells the computer
  48.      how to talk to your drive and provides the drive with a
  49.      drive letter.  Guest allows you to read files from and write
  50.      files to your Zip or Jaz disks.
  51.  
  52.      NOTE:  When you install Tools software under Windows 3.1, it
  53.      installs the Guest driver program in the computer's
  54.      AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that Guest loads each time the computer
  55.      boots.  For more information, refer to Section 7, "Using
  56.      Guest as a Permanent Driver."

  62.      System Requirements for Guest
  63.  
  64.      To run GUEST.EXE, you need a compatible version of DOS
  65.      and/or Windows.
  66.   
  67.        *  Compatible versions of DOS include MS-DOS version 5.0
  68.           or higher, and PC-DOS version 6.0 or higher.  To check
  69.           your version of DOS, use the DOS VER command.
  70.  
  71.         * Compatible versions of Windows include Windows 3.1 or
  72.           3.11, and Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or 3.11.

  75.      computer before Guest is loaded.

  81.      How to Load Guest
  82.      
  83.      Use the following procedure to load Guest:
  84.  
  85.       1.  Connect your drive to the computer according to the
  86.           instructions in the drive's Installation Guide.
  87.  
  88.       2.  Insert the "Install" floppy diskette for Windows/DOS
  89.           into the computer's floppy drive.
  90.  
  91.       3.  If you are using Windows, you MUST exit Windows before
  92.           loading Guest.  Select Exit from the Program Manager's
  93.           File menu, and click on OK to end the Windows session.
  94.  
  95.       4.  At the DOS prompt, type either "a:Guest" (if the
  96.           "Install" floppy is in drive a:), or "b:Guest" (if the
  97.           "Install" floppy is in drive b:), then press the Enter
  98.           key.  If you use Windows, you can restart Windows after
  99.           Guest loads.

  112.      Loading Guest into Upper Memory
  113.      
  114.      Guest can be loaded into upper memory using the DOS LOADHIGH
  115.      command, provided an expanded memory manager (such as
  116.      EMM386, QEMM, BLUEMAX, or 386MAX) is loaded on the computer. 
  117.      Refer to your DOS User's Guide for detailed information on
  118.      using the LOADHIGH command.

  122.      Section 4.2
  123.      Express Loading Guest
  124.      
  125.      Each time the Guest driver loads, it must also load an ASPI
  126.      manager so that it can communicate with your Zip or Jaz
  127.      drive through the computer's SCSI host adapter.  To provide
  128.      Guest with the flexibility to use a variety of host
  129.      adapters, the Windows/DOS "Install" diskette that came with
  130.      your drive includes ASPI managers for all current Iomega
  131.      adapters.  As Guest loads, it tries to load each ASPI
  132.      manager in turn until it finds one that allows it to talk to
  133.      your drive.
  134.  
  135.      Guest can load much more quickly if it does not have to use
  136.      this trial-and-error process to find the correct ASPI
  137.      manager.  If you use Guest routinely with one or two
  138.      specific host adapters, you may want to edit the GUEST.INI
  139.      file and remark-out the ASPI managers you do not need.  Then
  140.      Guest will try to load only the ASPI managers for the
  141.      adapters you normally use.
  142.  
  143.      Use the following procedure to customize your GUEST.INI
  144.      file:
  145.  
  146.      Step 1:  Copy all files on the "Install" diskette for
  147.      Windows/DOS to another disk.
  148.  
  149.      The "Install" diskette is permanently write-protected, so in
  150.      order to edit the GUEST.INI file and use the new file to run
  151.      the Guest program, you must copy the files to another disk. 
  152.      You can copy the files to another floppy diskette or to the
  153.      hard disk on the computer where you will be using the Guest
  154.      program.  If you need instructions on copying files, refer
  155.      to the documentation that came with your Windows or DOS
  156.      programs.
  157.  
  158.      Step 2:  Locate the GUEST.INI file on your copy of the
  159.      "Install" diskette and open it using a text editor. The
  160.      GUEST.INI file is a text file, so you can use the Notepad in
  161.      Windows, the DOS EDIT program, or any other ASCII text
  162.      editor to edit it.
  163.  
  164.      Step 3:  Identify the ASPI manager line Guest needs to load
  165.      to support your drive.
  166.  
  167.      For example, if you routinely use Guest when your drive is
  168.      connected to an Iomega PC1616 adapter, the Guest program
  169.      needs to load the line that reads "ASPI=ASPI1616.SYS".  Use
  170.      the following table to help you identify the ASPI manager
  171.      line you need to load:

  191.      Step 4:  Remark out each ASPI manager line you do NOT need
  192.      to load by inserting "rem " at the start of the line.

  195.      or Jaz drive is connected to an Iomega PC1616 adapter, you
  196.      would remark out all ASPI manager lines except the
  197.      ASPI1616.SYS line:

  208.      Step 5:  Save the changes to the GUEST.INI file and exit the
  209.      text editor.

  211.      If you are using an editor that has a variety of file
  212.      formats, be sure to save the GUEST.INI file as ASCII text or
  213.      DOS text.

  215.      NOTE:  If you later need to use an ASPI manager which has
  216.      been remarked out, simply edit GUEST.INI again and remove
  217.      the "rem " at the start of the ASPI manager line, or use the
  218.      original "Install" floppy diskette to run Guest.

  220.      ASPI Manager Reference:  Detailed reference information on
  221.      the ASPI managers used by the Guest driver is located in the
  222.      electronic "Installation Manual" (MANUAL.EXE).  You can
  223.      access the manual from the "Install" diskette for
  224.      Windows/DOS by going to the DOS prompt and typing:

  233.      Assigning Specific Drive Letters with GUEST.EXE.
  234.  
  235.      GUEST.EXE allows you to specify what drive letter you want
  236.      assigned to your drive.  You may want to use this feature if
  237.      you are running applications from your Zip or Jaz drive, or
  238.      if you use your drive as a portable device on other
  239.      computers and you want to maintain the same drive letter as
  240.      you use on your own machine.
  241.  
  242.      To tell GUEST.EXE which drive letter to use, add the
  243.      following option to the GUEST.EXE command line:
  244.  
  245.         letter=[the first drive letter you want Guest to use]
  246.  
  247.      For example, the following command line would tell Guest to
  248.      assign "g:" to the first drive it finds to support:
  249.  
  250.                guest letter=g
  251.  
  252.      If you have more that one drive supported by GUEST.EXE, each
  253.      additional drive would receive a drive letter following G in
  254.      alphabetical order.  (When supporting more than one drive,
  255.      GUEST.EXE assigns drive letters in order of SCSI ID number
  256.      from lowest to highest.)

  258.      NOTES:
  259.  
  260.      The Letter option can be used when running GUEST.EXE from a
  261.      floppy diskette, or it can be added to the GUEST.EXE command
  262.      line in the computer's AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  (See Section 7,
  263.      "Using Guest as a Permanent Driver" for information on
  264.      installing GUEST.EXE in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.)

  266.      When using the Letter option, there must be a LASTDRIVE
  267.      statement in the computer's CONFIG.SYS file that specifies a
  268.      letter later in the alphabet than that used with the Letter
  269.      option.  If GUEST.EXE is supporting more than one drive, the
  270.      LASTDRIVE statement must provide enough drive letters for
  271.      all supported drives.  If you need detailed instructions on
  272.      adding a LASTDRIVE statement to CONFIG.SYS, refer to the
  273.      information in Section 5.3, "No drive letter available for
  274.      the drive."

  280.      Solving Problems that may occur when using Guest

  285.      Guest does not assign a drive letter to your drive
  286.      
  287.      If you run the Guest program and it informs you that no
  288.      drives were found, or if Guest tells you that no drive
  289.      letters were added, and yet you cannot access your drive,
  290.      there is probably a hardware installation problem that is
  291.      preventing Guest from locating your Zip or Jaz drive.  Refer
  292.      to the printed User's Guide that shipped with your drive for
  293.      hardware installation troubleshooting information.

  297.      Section 5.2
  298.      Computer hangs when you run Guest
  299.  
  300.      If the computer hangs when you run Guest, edit the GUEST.INI
  301.      file and remove (rem) all ASPI managers except the one you
  302.      need to load.  If you are using a non-Iomega adapter and
  303.      Guest hangs, rem all of the ASPI managers in the GUEST.INI
  304.      file and make sure the ASPI manager for the non-Iomega
  305.      adapter is correctly installed in the computer's CONFIG.SYS
  306.      file.  For detailed instructions on editing GUEST.INI to rem
  307.      ASPI managers, refer to the instructions in Section 4.2,
  308.      "Express Loading Guest."

  313.      Section 5.3
  314.      Duplicate drive letters
  315.      
  316.      If you see two drive letters for a single drive on your
  317.      system after running GUEST.EXE, reboot the computer
  318.      immediately.  Using your drive when it is assigned duplicate
  319.      drive letters can result in data loss.  
  320.      
  321.      After the computer reboots, do not load GUEST.EXE.  You do
  322.      not need to use Guest  to access the drive on this system
  323.      because the drive is already being assigned a drive letter.
  324.  
  325.      NOTE: It is recommended that you always use an Iomega driver
  326.      (either GUEST.EXE or SCSIDRVR.SYS) to support your Zip or
  327.      Jaz drive.  If you see two drive letters after running
  328.      GUEST.EXE, check your system to make sure a non-Iomega
  329.      driver is not supporting your Iomega drive.  Note that if
  330.      the drive is under BIOS control (either adapter or computer
  331.      BIOS), disk removability will not be supported.

  335.      Section 5.4
  336.      No drive letter available for the drive
  337.      
  338.      If all drive letters available for physical drives are in
  339.      use on the system, GUEST.EXE will be unable to assign a
  340.      drive letter to the drive you want to support.  Use the DOS
  341.      LASTDRIVE command in the computer's CONFIG.SYS file to
  342.      increase the number of physical drive letters.  For example,
  343.      adding the statement LASTDRIVE=m to CONFIG.SYS will provide
  344.      drive letters for ten additional drives after drive C:.  The
  345.      following procedure provides detailed instructions for
  346.      editing the CONFIG.SYS file. 
  347.  
  348.      Step 1:  Use a text editor to open the CONFIG.SYS file.
  349.  
  350.      You can use the Notepad in Windows, the DOS EDIT program, or
  351.      any other ASCII text editor.  The CONFIG.SYS file is a text
  352.      file located in the root directory on the computer's boot
  353.      drive (C:).
  354.  
  355.      Step 2:  Add the following line to the end of the CONFIG.SYS
  356.      file.
  357.  
  358.                LASTDRIVE=m 
  359.  
  360.      This will provide ten additional drive letters for any new
  361.      drives you want to add to your system, including your Zip or
  362.      Jaz drive.  If you do not need all of the drive letters
  363.      between d: and m: for physical drives, you can use a letter
  364.      earlier in the alphabet in place of the letter m; however,
  365.      make sure you provide enough drive letters after e: to
  366.      accommodate the drive you are using with Guest and any other
  367.      drives you may add to your system.  If your CONFIG.SYS file
  368.      already has a LASTDRIVE line, change the last drive letter
  369.      to one further down the alphabet.  Do not set the last drive
  370.      letter to a letter late in the alphabet, such as X, Y, or Z,
  371.      as this will use extra memory and prevent access to network
  372.      drives assigned these letters on your system.
  373.  
  374.      Step 3:  Save the changes to the CONFIG.SYS file and exit
  375.      the text editor.
  376.  
  377.      If you are using an editor that has a variety of file
  378.      formats, be sure to save as ASCII text or DOS text.
  379.  
  380.      Step 4:  Reboot the computer, and load GUEST.EXE after the
  381.      computer boots. 
  382.  
  383.      Network Users:  You may have to relocate your network drive
  384.      letter.  
  385.  
  386.      Ask your network administrator for help, or refer to the
  387.      following instructions:
  388.  
  389.      Your first network drive letter will be the letter following
  390.      the one used in the LASTDRIVE statement in your CONFIG.SYS
  391.      file.  For example, if you used LASTDRIVE=m, the first
  392.      network drive letter will be N.
  393.  
  394.      If your network drive letter has changed, applications you
  395.      are running from the network (such as Windows or other
  396.      applications that reference specific drive letters) may fail
  397.      to work correctly unless they are reinstalled or adjusted
  398.      for the drive letter change.  If you use a batch file to
  399.      connect to the network, it will need to be adjusted to the
  400.      new drive letter.  Your network login script may need to be
  401.      revised if it refers to a specific drive letter for your
  402.      network drive.
  403.  
  404.      Check the following:
  405.  
  406.        *  Edit the Path statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
  407.           correctly reference your new network drive letter.
  408.  
  409.        *  Edit any batch files which load shells or applications
  410.           from a network (including AUTOEXEC.BAT) to correctly
  411.           reference new drive letter assignments.
  412.  
  413.        *  Edit your Windows "INI" files and your Windows groups
  414.           to correctly reference your new drive letters.
  415.  
  416.        *  Check other application setup files.  Rerun the setup
  417.           if drive letters cannot be edited.
  418.  
  419.        *  Check your user login script for references to specific
  420.           network drive letters.  
  421.  
  422.      Reboot your computer and check your applications. 
  423.      Applications that do not work with the new drive letter may
  424.      need to be reinstalled.

  429.      Using Guest with non-Iomega ASPI managers
  430.  
  431.      The Guest driver utilizes ASPI managers to communicate with
  432.      drives connected through a SCSI host adapter, so the
  433.      "Install" diskette for Windows/DOS includes ASPI managers
  434.      for current Iomega adapters.  If you are using a non-Iomega
  435.      host adapter and ASPI manager software, make sure the ASPI
  436.      manager is correctly loaded in the computer's CONFIG.SYS
  437.      file.  This will enable GUEST.EXE to locate any Iomega
  438.      drives connected to the adapter.  If you need instructions
  439.      on installing the ASPI manager software in CONFIG.SYS, refer
  440.      to the documentation that came with the adapter.
  441.  
  442.      NOTE:  If the adapter does not have an ASPI manager, Guest
  443.      will not be able to operate.

  448.      Drive C: no longer accessible
  449.  
  450.      If you are booting from an Iomega PC1600 or Adaptec adapter,
  451.      the ASPI manager for the adapter must be installed in the
  452.      computer's CONFIG.SYS file before GUEST.EXE is run.  If the
  453.      ASPI manager is not installed in CONFIG.SYS when GUEST.EXE
  454.      is run, Guest will load the ASPI manager via the GUEST.INI
  455.      file, which will cause drive C: to no longer be accessible.  
  456.  
  457.      NOTE:  The ASPI manager for the bootable adapter must be
  458.      loaded before any other ASPI managers in the CONFIG.SYS
  459.      file.  If you need information on installing Iomega ASPI
  460.      managers, refer to the electronic "Installation Manual"
  461.      (MANUAL.EXE).  You can access the manual from the "Install"
  462.      diskette for Windows/DOS by typing:

  470.      Required Files for Using Guest
  471.      
  472.      All of the files needed to load Guest are present on the
  473.      "Install" floppy diskette for Windows/DOS.  If you create
  474.      additional disks for loading Guest, make sure you include
  475.      the following files:
  476.  
  477.           GUEST.EXE
  478.           GUEST.INI
  479.           ASPIPPM1.SYS
  480.           ASPIPPM2.SYS
  481.           ASPIIDE.SYS
  482.           ASPIATAP.SYS
  483.           ASPI8DOS.SYS
  484.           ADVASPI.SYS
  485.           ASPIPC16.SYS
  486.           ASPI1616.SYS
  487.           NIBBLE.ILM (Required for ASPIPPM1.SYS)

  490.      Refer to Section 4.2, "Express Loading Guest," for
  491.      instructions on customizing the GUEST.INI file to minimize
  492.      the time it takes to load Guest.

  498.      Using Guest as a Permanent Driver
  499.  
  500.      The Guest program, GUEST.EXE, is also the permanent driver
  501.      program for your Zip or Jaz drive under Windows 3.1.  If you
  502.      install Tools software under Windows 3.1 using the SETUP.EXE
  503.      program, it automatically installs GUEST.EXE in the
  504.      computer's AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  This causes GUEST.EXE to run
  505.      each time the computer boots.  If Guest can locate a Zip or
  506.      Jaz drive (or other supported drive), it loads into the
  507.      computer's memory and assigns your drive a drive letter.  If
  508.      Guest cannot locate a supported drive, it does not load.
  509.  
  510.      If you use the Guest program frequently on a particular
  511.      computer, you may want to install GUEST.EXE as a permanent
  512.      driver on that computer.  If Windows is installed on the
  513.      computer, the easiest way to permanently install Guest is by
  514.      using the Setup program on the "Install" floppy diskette for
  515.      Windows/DOS.  If desired, you can select to install only the
  516.      driver.

  518.      To run the SETUP.EXE program, insert the Windows/DOS Install
  519.      diskette into the computer's floppy drive.  Load Windows and
  520.      choose Run from the Program Manager's File menu.  In the
  521.      Command Line box, type either a:setup (if the Install
  522.      diskette is in drive a:), or b:setup (if the Install
  523.      diskette is in drive b:), then click on OK or press the
  524.      Enter key.
  525.  
  526.      If the computer does not have Windows, you can manually
  527.      install GUEST.EXE as the permanent driver in the computer's
  528.      AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  For a detailed manual installation
  529.      procedure, refer to MANUAL.EXE located on your "Install"
  530.      floppy diskette.

  535.      Using Guest on Other Systems
  536.  
  537.      In addition to Guest for Windows 3.1/DOS, there are versions
  538.      of Guest for Windows 95 and for Macintosh.  Use these other
  539.      versions of Guest if you ever need to use your Zip or Jaz
  540.      drive temporarily on one of these systems.
  541.  
  542.      Windows NT Users:  There is not currently a version of Guest
  543.      for Windows NT because Windows NT does not yet support plug-
  544.      and-play.  When connecting a Zip or Jaz drive to a Windows
  545.      NT system, refer to the adapter installation instructions in
  546.      the NTReadme.txt file on the Windows NT Install diskette
  547.      that came with your drive.

  550.      To use your drive on a PC running Windows 95:
  551.      Connect your drive and use the Guest95 program which is
  552.      included on the Windows/DOS "Install" floppy diskette:
  553.  
  554.       1.  Insert the Windows/DOS "Install" diskette that came
  555.           with your Zip or Jaz drive into the computer's floppy
  556.           drive.
  557.  
  558.       2.  Open My Computer and double click on the floppy drive
  559.           icon.
  560.  
  561.       3.  Double click on the icon for Guest95.
  562.  
  563.      Refer to "Help for Guest95" on the Windows/DOS "Install"
  564.      diskette for additional information.

  567.      To use your drive on a Macintosh:
  568.      You can load the Iomega Driver temporarily from any Zip or
  569.      Jaz disk that is formatted for Macintosh:
  570.  
  571.       1.  Shut down the Macintosh and connect your Zip or Jaz
  572.           drive.
  573.  
  574.       2.  Turn on power to your drive and insert a Mac-formatted
  575.           disk.  (This procedure will work only if you use a Zip
  576.           or Jaz disk that is formatted for Macintosh.)
  577.  
  578.       3.  Start the Macintosh following your normal startup
  579.           procedure.
