  2.  Presenting the GMega Sound Library
  3.  ----------------------------------
  4.  
  5.  WAVmaker (http://www.abc.se/~m9303) has a brand new sound 
  6.  library! Compression has been relaxed, allowing a major 
  7.  quality improvement. All sounds have been re-recorded and 
  8.  packed with the new compression code. The result is the 
  9.  GMega Sound Library 1.0: ten disks filled to the rim with 
  10.  sound data (the old library required only three disks, and 
  11.  that included a fairly large installer).

  14.  About this package
  15.  ------------------
  16.  
  17.  The document you are reading is part of the GMega Library
  18.  Demo 1.1, a package designed for use with WAVmaker for 
  19.  Windows (3.1) or WAVmaker for Windows 95/NT. It contains...
  20.  
  21.  - The new sound packer/unpacker (DFT.DLL). Both a 16 bit 
  22.    build and a 32 bit build are included. Which one you should 
  23.    use depends on which WAVmaker build you have. If you are 
  24.    running WAVmaker for Windows (3.1), let the installer unpack
  25.    the 16 bit DFT.DLL. If you are running WAVmaker for Windows 
  26.    95/NT, let it install the 32 bit DFT.DLL.
  27.    
  28.    The new DFT.DLL replaces the old one in WAVmaker's base 
  29.    directory.
  30.     
  31.    IMPORTANT: The new DFT.DLL is *** NOT *** backward compatible 
  32.               with the old DFT format. It will neither recognize 
  33.               nor attempt to unpack old DFTs. 
  34.  
  35.               If you intend to keep using your old DFTs, make sure 
  36.               that the installer option to back up the original 
  37.               DFT.DLL is checked before clicking "Go!".
  38.    
  39.  - New PRGs and DFTs for the same instruments included in the WAVmaker
  40.    Evaluation Package, i.e. Honky-Tonk Piano, Harpsichord, Slap Bass, 
  41.    Strings and Standard GM Drum Set.
  42.    
  43.    NOTE:      The installer will not back up your old PRGs and DFTs. 
  44.               If you wish to keep them, start up WAVmaker, choose new 
  45.               library directory paths and exit. The installer will use 
  46.               the new directories (it reads them from WAVmaker's 
  47.               initialization file, WM.INI) leaving the old ones alone.

  50.    IMPORTANT: Note that WAVmaker's "Make WAVs" command does not
  51.               by default overwrite existing WAVs. You must either
  52.               choose a new (empty) WAV directory from within WAVmaker
  53.               prior to installation, let the installer delete all old 
  54.               WAVs or force them to be overwritten at expansion time 
  55.               by changing "No" to "Yes" (select and double-click) in 
  56.               the "Make" column of WAVmaker's "Make WAVs" dialog. 
  57.               Failure to do so will yield unpredictable results as 
  58.               new PRGs are used with old WAVs.
  59.  
  60.  - The same demo MIDs included in the WAVmaker Evaluation Package -
  61.    ALMOST! The difference is that the new MIDs have their volume
  62.    set to max (127), apparently the most common setting for MIDs
  63.    floating around the Net. The MIDI files in the WAVmaker Evaluation
  64.    Package have a volume setting of 64. While I maintain that using
  65.    127 as the default volume setting is a BAD, BAD, BAD habit 
  66.    (probably inflicted upon us by owners of the AWE32, with its
  67.    notoriously low output levels), it's a common one, and I have
  68.    begrudgingly decided to adapt to it by lowering the default 
  69.    rendering volume. You can of course reverse this choice, either 
  70.    temporarily (with the Volume setting in the Convert window) or
  71.    permanently (by lowering the Base Volume settings in all PRGs -
  72.    remember that PRG Base Volume is interpreted as the volume at
  73.    which the sound was RECORDED!).

  75.    NOTE: The above remarks about keeping your old PRGs and DFTs apply 
  76.          to your old MIDs as well.

  78.  - OrderGM.EXE (with OrderGM.HLP), for new WAVmaker users and users 
  79.    with Standard Registrations wishing to upgrade (see below).

  81.  - The INSTALL.EXE installation shell which will aid you in putting 
  82.    all the above files in place.

  85.  Installation
  86.  ------------

  88.  Run INSTALL.EXE (surprise!). If you don't want to (or can't) use 
  89.  INSTALL.EXE for some reason, you can do a manual installation. All 
  90.  files with extension DAT are ordinary ZIP files, with the exception 
  91.  of UNPACK.DAT, which is just Info-ZIPs UNZIP.EXE traveling under
  92.  false name. The contents of all archives should be obvious from the
  93.  filenames.

  96.  How to get the full library
  97.  ---------------------------
  98.  
  99.  As of October 1, 1996, the full GMega Sound Library is 
  100.  delivered upon WAVmaker registration (either Standard
  101.  or Advanced). Delivery is by first class air mail (it's
  102.  really too large to download!). Use the included 
  103.  OrderGM.EXE utility to order.
  104.  
  105.  NOTE: The WAVmaker Evaluation Package will continue
  106.        to ship with the old-style DFT.DLL and DFTs to 
  107.        keep its size down. The GMega Library Demo will
  108.        remain a separately downloadable package for
  109.        those who find themselves seriously interested
  110.        in WAVmaker.

  112.  The following upgrade policy applies to registered 
  113.  WAVmaker users.
  114.  
  115.  - Users with a Standard Registration: $15 + $15 Shipping 
  116.    & Handling (YES: disks, labels, packaging, mailing and 
  117.    payment collector fees cost me that much!). Payment is 
  118.    through Kagi. Please use the included OrderGM.EXE to 
  119.    submit your order.

  121.  - Users with an Advanced Registration: *** FREE *** 
  122.    (consider this the first installment on your free upgrade 
  123.    to the upcoming WAVmaker 3.0). If you don't hear from me 
  124.    soon please drop me a line stating full name, date of
