  11. ABSTRACT          OS/2 (R) 2.1 fulfills IBM's stated intent to deliver an
  12.            enhanced OS/2 32-bit operating system.  It includes support for
  13.            Windows (1) 3.1 applications, a new 32-bit graphics engine, 256-color
  14.            XGA (R) and Super Video Graphics Adapter (SVGA) device drivers,
  15.            support for high-speed printers and popular CD-ROM drives.
  16.                   OS/2 2.1 is enabled to support the emerging technologies of
  17.            mobile computers, pen-based systems and multimedia.  Multimedia
  18.            Presentation Manager/2 (TM) (MMPM/2) is included with this
  19.            OS/2 offering and adds enhanced audio, basic image and software
  20.            motion video playback capabilities for users of OS/2.
  21.                   The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 2.1 contains bindings, tools,
  22.            sample programs and documentation to assist the OS/2 software
  23.            developer.  The Multimedia Presentation Manager (R) Toolkit/2
  24.            (MMPMTK/2) allows developers to take advantage of MMPM/2 function.

  68. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  69.                   OS/2 2.1 provides all the benefits of OS/2 2.0 and goes
  70.            further by delivering industry-standard device support, compliance
  71.            with industry standards, enhanced standing as a premier client, and
  72.            enhanced support for OS/2, DOS and Windows programs, now updated to
  73.            include Windows 3.1 and multimedia programs.  All the new features
  74.            are delivered on top of a stable, mature platform "fit and finished"
  75.            over time and in direct response to customer needs.  Two widespread
  76.            beta tests of OS/2 2.1 provided customer and software developer
  77.            feedback into the development process.
  78.                   As the number of industry awards continues to multiply, and as
  79.            customers, the press, consultants and industry analysts generate new
  80.            praise for OS/2, it is clear that the market is ready for OS/2 2.1.
  81.            WINDOWS 3.1 APPLICATIONS SUPPORT
  82.            The OS/2 2.1 product provides a single environment from which the
  83.            broadest range of PC applications -- OS/2, DOS, and Windows -- can be
  84.            used and displayed simultaneously.  Under OS/2 2.1, users now can run
  85.            Windows 3.1 standard-mode applications, including Windows multimedia
  86.            applications, and major enhanced-mode applications; i.e., Mathematica
  87.            and OmniPage Professional, not requiring a specific type of device
  88.            driver called a VxD.  Performance is comparable to that of native
  89.            Windows 3.1.  Windows programs also benefit from the inherent
  90.            protection provided by OS/2.
  91.                   Other enhancements in WIN-OS/2 (TM) include:
  92.            o   The ability to start OS/2 and DOS applications from within a
  93.                Windows application
  94.            o   A new WIN-OS/2 Setup object allowing global configuration of all
  95.                WIN-OS/2 sessions in the System Setup folder
  96.            o   Improved performance of cut-and-paste operations
  97.            o   Improved performance of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
  98.            o   Addition of the Level 2.5 Adobe Type Manager (ATM) fonts
  99.                providing an improved level of function and performance; True
  100.                Type fonts are included as well.
  101.                   If users choose to install WIN-OS/, they also have the option
  102.            of installing this portion of the OS/2 2.1 code on a drive other than
  103.            the default drive.  Since WIN-OS2 enabling requires about 8MB of
  104.            space on the hard disk, this feature provides flexibility for users
  105.            with limited disk space.
  106.                   WIN-OS/2 also has been enhanced in OS/2 2.1 to include the
  107.            Windows 3.1 File Manager, the Windows 3.1 printer and display device
  108.            drivers, and most Windows 3.1 accessories, including the following:
  109.            o   Calculator
  110.            o   Calendar
  111.            o   Character map
  112.            o   Media player
  113.            o   Notepad
  114.            o   Object packager
  115.            o   Paintbrush
  116.            o   Sound recorder
  117.            o   Write
  118.            o   Clock
  119.            o   Cardfile.
  120.                   OS/2 2.1 provides support for Windows applications with
  121.            Object-Linking-and Embedding (OLE) capabilities if they run in the
  122.            same WIN-OS/2 session.  (The Windows Write and Paintbrush accessories
  123.            delivered with WIN-OS2 are OLE-enabled).  Users with limited disk
  124.            space are given the option of installing the WIN-OS2 3.1 accessories.

  126.            THE WORKPLACE SHELL (TM)
  127.            In 1992, the availability of OS/2 2.0 set the standard for
  128.            ease-of-use in the personal computer industry.  In response to user
  129.            requirements, the object-oriented Workplace Shell implemented in
  130.            OS/2 2.0 is fine-tuned even further in OS/2 2.1.
  131.            o   The icon representing a folder object is used for all DOS,
  132.                Windows and OS/2 program groups.  These new container objects are
  133.                created automatically when users choose to migrate their DOS,
  134.                Windows and OS/2 programs.
  135.            o   The migration facility is improved so that users migrating from
  136.                DOS, Windows, or OS/2 can retain their previous application
  137.                environments with minimal manual intervention.  The migration
  138.                database now includes nearly 500 applications.
  139.            o   The Settings notebook menu page is enhanced to support drag and
  140.                drop.
  141.            o   The visual appearance of notebooks is improved.
  142.            o   New graphic bitmaps are added to use as backgrounds for folders.

  144.            32-BIT DISPLAY DEVICE DRIVERS
  145.            OS/2 2.1 now includes 32-bit device drivers for SVGA, 8514/A, XGA,
  146.            XGA-2 and VGA display adapters.  The new SVGA display device drivers
  147.            support the most popular chipsets in the industry (Headland, ATI,
  148.            Cirrus Logic, Trident, Tseng, Western Digital, and IBM).  The SVGA,
  149.            XGA, XGA-2 and 8514/A drivers support sessions running in the
  150.            background and foreground, in full-screen and seamless modes, at
  151.            resolutions of up to 1024x768, with support for up to 256 colors.
  152.                   Because of its design, OS/2 2.1 is enabled for new display
  153.            device drivers to be added as they become available from IBM or third
  154.            parties.  IBM also is working with the manufacturers of other leading
  155.            display adapters and independent software vendors to ensure that the
  156.            accelerated display functions, such as those implemented on the S3
  157.            805 and 926 chipsets, are exploited under OS/2 2.1.  These drivers
  158.            will be distributed on bulletin board systems as they become
  159.            available.
  160.            SUPPORT FOR NEW PRINTERS
  161.            OS/2 2.1 includes support for more than 260 printers, including the
  162.            newest, high-speed printers, such as the following:
  163.            o   HP Laserjet 4
  164.            o   HP Deskjet 500 Series
  165.            o   HP Deskjet 550 Series
  166.            o   Epson and compatibles
  167.            o   Laserjet compatibles
  168.            o   PostScript printers.
  169.                   IBM has worked closely with leaders in the industry to make
  170.            sure that OS/2 2.1 printer drivers are available.  Installation of
  171.            printer drivers is now easier to do.  Users can modify the priority
  172.            of jobs in the spooler in order to optimize printing performance.
  173.            32-BIT GRAPHICS ENGINE
  174.            OS/2 2.1 delivers a 32-bit graphics engine that helps to improve the
  175.            performance of 32-bit applications and display drivers.  The Palette
  176.            Manager, a transparent color mapping capability, and a pixel
  177.            translation capability are new functions available to the application
  178.            developer.  Using the Palette Manager, applications have access to
  179.            more than 256 colors to provide clearer and brighter images.
  180.            Transparent color mapping allows one application to superimpose one
  181.            image on another.  Pixel translation enables high-speed color
  182.            changes, shading and image brightening.
  183.                   Under OS/2 2.1, the 64K segment limitation is removed, and
  184.            applications have access to up to 65,636 bitmap handles and up to
  185.            16,384 device context handles.  These improvements result in
  186.            productivity gains for application developers.
  187.            32-BIT MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT
  188.            Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) Version 1.1 is now a
  189.            separately installed feature packaged with OS/2 2.1.  MMPM/2 enhances
  190.            the functionality of the OS/2 system by adding digital and CD audio
  191.            and software motion video playback capabilities (without additional
  192.            hardware), which can be combined with traditional text and graphics.
  193.                   MMPM/2 takes advantage of the features of OS/2, including the
  194.            ability to run multiple tasks concurrently, which is essential for
  195.            synchronizing multiple data streams.  And, the flat memory model
  196.            implemented in OS/2 is key in handling multimedia data objects that
  197.            can be many megabytes in size.  Multimedia applications written to
  198.            the Media Control Interface specification can rely on OS/2 2.1 to
  199.            manage sharing of hardware devices.
  200.                   MMPM/2 supports the RIFF WAVE, INDEO, AVI, CD/DA and CD/XA
  201.            industry-standard file formats and includes device drivers for
  202.            leading audio adapters:
  203.            o   Creative Labs' family of SoundBlaster cards
  204.            o   Media Vision's ProAudio Spectrum 16 card
  205.            o   IBM's Capture and Playback Adapter (M-ACPA) card.
  206.                   Several new user interfaces are included as part of the MMPM/2
  207.            enhancement to OS/2 2.1:
  208.            o   A CD Player allowing standard audio CDs to be played on a
  209.                personal computer.
  210.            o   A Digital Video Player allowing INDEO and Ultimotion digital
  211.                video files to be displayed on a personal computer.
  212.            o   A Digital Audio Player allowing digitally recorded audio to be
  213.                played back through a supported audio adapter.
  214.            o   System sounds and alerts for users of OS/2 2.1.
  215.            o   Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel macros, allowing users to annotate their
  216.                spreadsheets with audio.
  217.            o   Multimedia enhancements to the REXX procedural language.
  218.                   The OS/2 2.1 product delivered on CD ROM also contains a
  219.            collection of multimedia data files.
  220.            ENHANCEMENTS FOR MOBILE COMPUTERS
  221.            OS/2 2.1 supports the Level 2.0 Personal Computer Memory Card
  222.            International Association (PCMCIA) specification for
  223.            credit-card-sized adapter cards, such as memory, I/O devices, modems
  224.            and LAN adapters.  These adapter cards come with their own device
  225.            drivers and configuration software and can be inserted or removed
  226.            while the computer is powered on.  OS/2 2.1 is enabled to support
  227.            cards (memory, hardfiles, and communications) complying with Levels
  228.            1, 2 and 3 of the PCMCIA specification.
  229.                   OS/2 2.1 also complies with the Advanced Power Management
  230.            (APM) specification, which reduces a personal computer's consumption
  231.            of power and extends the life of the battery.  This support is
  232.            enabled automatically when OS/2 2.1 is installed on a system
  233.            supporting the APM standard, and an APM object is displayed on the
  234.            OS/2 Desktop.
  235.                   The implementation of a larger cursor in OS/2 2.1 than in
  236.            OS/2 2.0 improves the visibility of the cursor on the screen for
  237.            users of LCD displays.
  238.            ENHANCED CD-ROM DRIVE SUPPORT
  239.            OS/2 2.1 now can be installed from a CD-ROM drive, which saves time
  240.            and improves the ease of installing the system.  If a CD-ROM drive is
  241.            attached to the system, a CD-ROM object will be displayed in the
  242.            Drives folder.
  243.                   OS/2 2.1 supports SCSI-based CD-ROM drives, including Sony,
  244.            Toshiba, Hitachi, IBM, Pioneer, Texel and NEC in combination with the
  245.            most popular SCSI-based adapter drivers (Adaptec, Future Domain, IBM,
  246.            DPT).  The "pluggable" design enables additional SCSI and non-SCSI
  247.            drives to be installed.
  248.            OTHER OS/2 2.1 ENHANCEMENTS
  249.            o   The problem debugging facilities in OS/2 2.1 are enhanced to
  250.                include the ability to log trap screens to the hardfile and
  251.                initiate process-level dumps.  Documentation is available on
  252.                request.
  253.            o   OS/2 2.1 includes changes to exploit Intel's new Pentium chip.
  254.                The first phase of this exploitation improves the performance of
  255.                DOS sessions through the use of virtual mode extensions.
  256.            o   Each DOS session under OS/2 2.1 is now able to run DOS and
  257.                Windows programs written to comply with the Microsoft CD-ROM
  258.                Extensions (MSCDEX).  OS/2 automatically handles the interface to
  259.                the CD ROM drive so there is no longer a need to install an
  260.                MSCDEX device driver.
  261.            o   OS/2 2.1 now supports a separate AUTOEXEC.BAT file for each DOS
  262.                session.
  263.            o   OS/2 2.1 is enhanced to run as an excellent client when attached
  264.                to an AS/400 (R) server using the PC Support Version 2, Release 3
  265.                product.
  266.            o   For users who prefer a hardcopy manual, the OS/2 2.1 USING THE
  267.                OPERATING SYSTEM  manual has been expanded to include most of the
  268.                information available online and also to provide useful tips and
  269.                techniques for using the system.

  273.            The OS/2 Online Book Collection is a collection of over 100
  274.            OS/2-based product manuals, "white papers" and product-related
  275.            publications delivered on a CD-ROM.  These publications are valued at
  276.            more than $1,000 if purchased separately.  The books are organized
  277.            into easy-to-use bookshelves with IBM Library Readers for viewing
  278.            under OS/2 or DOS.  The Library Readers are powerful search and
  279.            retrieval tools allowing fast, easy access to information.
  280.                   The CD-ROM also contains tools for fast transfer and storage
  281.            on VM or MVS-based host computers for use with separately available
  282.            BookManager (R) READ/VM or READ/CMS programs.

  286.            These build, resource, MMPM/2 and PM tools, as well as the System
  287.            Object Module (SOM) precompiler, can be integrated with IBM
  288.            WorkFrame/2, and are designed specifically to enhance productivity as
  289.            follows:
  290.            o   Create and modify dialog boxes for use with PM programs
  291.            o   Create and modify fonts for use with PM programs
  292.            o   Create and modify icons, bit-maps and pointers for use with PM
  293.                programs
  294.            o   Create .HLP files for panels, or viewable .INF files from tagged
  295.                files
  296.            o   Create binary files from resource editor files, making the

  307.                   The sample programs included with the Developer's Toolkit for
  308.            OS/2 2.1 and MMPMTK/2 demonstrate how the APIs are used, and can be
  309.            used as models for the application being developed, to help speed the

  311.                   Using the hypertext link facilities in IPF along with the
  312.            online API documentation, the user can quickly find needed
  313.            information.  In addition, API statements can be copied directly into
  314.            the user's program by "cutting and pasting" from the online
  315.            documentation to the user's editor.
  316.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  317.            OS/2 2.1 protects the customers investment in existing DOS and
  318.            Windows applications by providing the capability for them to run
  319.            simultaneously and seamlessly with OS/2 16 and 32-bit applications on
  320.            the same display.  The customer can continue to run his existing
  321.            applications while upgrading to advanced 32-bit OS/2 applications.

  343.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum hardware configuration for
  344.            OS/2 2.1 is as follows:
  345.                   PS/2 (R), IBM Industrial Computer, PS/1 (R), PS/ValuePoint
  346.            (TM) or selected non-IBM personal computer with a 386-SX or
  347.            compatible or higher processor, 4MB system memory and a hard disk
  348.            with 20MB to 40MB free space available to the operating system
  349.            depending upon installation options selected.  IBM recommends 6MB or
  350.            greater system memory and an 80MB or greater hard disk for many
  351.            application scenarios.
  352.                   In addition OS/2 2.1 supports a broad range of hard disks,
  353.            diskette drives, adapter and display combinations, pointing devices,
  354.            printers, CD-ROM drives, optical drives and portable computers.
  355.                   The hardware configuration for the Developer's Toolkit for
  356.            OS/2 2.1 is as follows:
  357.                   Installation of the MMPMTK/2 portion of the Developer's
  358.            Toolkit for OS/2 2.1 and/or additional kernel debug version support
  359.            (OS/2 2.0, 2.00.1 Preload, 2.00.1 Preload Backup or 2.0 Service Pak)
  360.            requires an OS/2 supported CD-ROM drive.  Diskette installation is

  510.            IBM EDUCATION FULFILLMENT CENTER:  The announced programs are

  515.                   The IBM Education Fulfillment Center is the order processing
  516.            location for selected Personal Computers and related
  517.            hardware/software for eligible education end-users.
  518.            PROGRAM UPGRADE
  519.                   The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed
  520.            users of OS/2 Version 2.X, OS/2 1.X and DOS to obtain the new
  521.            function for a program upgrade charge.  The program upgrade to
  522.            OS/2 Version 2.1 is available from June 14, 1993.  Orders will be
  523.            accepted now.  These upgrades will be available through IBM
  524.            Authorized Personal Computer Dealers and Industry Remarketers --
  525.            Personal Computers certified to market IBM Authorized Advanced
  526.            Products.  The remarketer will require a Proof of License for each
  527.            upgrade ordered.  The original Proof of License is the colored front
  528.            cover page (inside the hard binder) or the separate Proof of License
  529.            page in the program package as identified by IBM to the remarketer.
  530.                   Customers may also order upgrades through the IBM branch
  531.            office using the IBM Personal Computer/System Program IBM US Upgrade
  532.            and Certification Order Form.
  533.                   To receive program package upgrades at a discount, the ICA and
  534.            a volume discount addendum with the appropriate volume discount
  535.            exhibit must be in effect.
  536.                   The order may only be placed through the local IBM office
  537.            using the IBM Personal Computer/System Program IBM US Upgrade and
  538.            Certification Order Form.
  539.                   To receive additional license upgrades at a discount, the ICA
  540.            and a volume discount addendum with the appropriate volume discount
  541.            exhibit must be in effect.  The total quantity of upgrades acquired
  542.            for a specific program may not exceed the total quantity of program
  543.            packages and additional licenses previously acquired for that
  544.            program.  Proof of License for upgrade eligibility for additional
  545.            license upgrades is a copy of this invoice or previously acquired
  546.            Proof of Additional License certificate.
  547.                   Additional license upgrades can be entered through the branch
  548.            office using the IBM US Upgrade and Certification Order Form or

  550.            TERMS AND CONDITIONS
