Caesar
Welcome to the grandeur and glory of Imperial Rome. It is the first
century BC, and the republic has just fallen to the first Emperor,
Caesar Augustus. Positions of power change hands as the would-be
masters of the Empire rise and fall in the Emperor's favour.
You are one such ambitious public figure. Through patient skill and
hard nosed dealing, you have managed to secure the governorship of a
province of the Roman Empire. If you can turn the undeveloped
backwater into a secure and prosperous home for its citizens, you will
rise in rank, and in the Emperors esteem. If you can repeat that
success throughout your career, anything is possible - perhaps even
the throne itself.
This is a working demo of Impressions' great new empire building sim.
The game that appears here includes the chance to build a city using
all the constructions that made the Romans legendary as a civilised
people. Baths, the forum, amphitheatres; all the most memorable
aspects of the Roman empire are shown here and it's up to you to make
sure that the city grows and develops.
Many parts of the final game are not implemented in this demo but
enough is here to give you a good feel of the final product. You will
for instance find that the barbarians continually wreak havoc on your
towns and that the slave population is insufficient to keep your town
pristine. These restrictions are only in the demo and not in the final
game.
In the final game you will be able to build walls, towers and barracks
to protect your cities. Soldiers will patrol the roads and engage the
barbarians as they attack. In a higher regional level you will have
the ability to attack the barbarians with your legions before they
reach your city's boundaries. Attacking the barbarians can either be
effected through commands already in the Caesar game or by loading in
an updated version of Impressions' great Roman battle sim Cohort and
fighting out the battle in full detail! You must build up your armies
by allocating funds and resources from your city.
There will be many levels of difficulty involved in building your
cities and developing regions. Slaves will be allocated by you to
areas such as fire prevention, road maintenance or construction. As
the size of your city increases, so will the need for more slaves to
look after it. Money can be raised through taxes on people and
industry and in a fast growing city you must be careful not to grow
faster than you can afford. You will be judged as to how you are
progressing in four ways:
Peace - the degree of security your people enjoy
Culture - the public and cultural amenities available to citizens
Prosperity - the wealth you have brought your province
Empire - the communications and transport network in the region
If the people are unhappy they will create unrest in the city and
buildings may crumble or be burned down. It is up to you to ensure the
happiness of the population by providing theatres and entertainment.
Water supply and the forum are the two key assets of any town and
without them you will surely perish.
We hope that you enjoy this taste of Roman life and remember to look
out for the finished game in September.
