  23. If you want to use the A3000, definately get the graphics card.  Otherwise
  24. you will be stuck running at 640 x 400 and b&w X.  As far as speed, Amiga
  25. Linux seems slower that it's PC counterparts, even on comparable CPU's.
  26. From what I have read, Linux is tied to the task switching features of the
  27. X86 CPU rather heavily.

  29. I have Linux on my 486DX2 PC and my A4000.  The Amiga version is coming
  30. along nicely, but IMHO is not as good as the PC version yet.  Mostly due
  31. to lack of drivers for various peripherals, like SCSI and graphics cards
  32. and a complete, easy to set up distribution.

  34. You absolutely need a high resolution fast graphics card to run X 
  35. productively.  Good graphics cards are 2-3 times the cost of their PC 
  36. counterparts.  Also there is no distribution, like Slackware for Amiga
  37. Linux and AFAIK, no Motif if you need it.  So you need to roll your own,
  38. track down the latest versions of system utilities, libraries, and binaries,
  39. and so forth.

  41. My hat is off to the various people supporting Amiga Linux, though, they are
  42. very helpful.

  44. I wonder how many folks are actually using Linux or NetBSD on Amigas?
