-
- As far as I know the UNIX running at the same time as AMIGA OS is called
- AMINIX. Apparently it's still being developed but I don't.
- The kernel is BSD compatible and needs EGS driver for gfx.
- Here's the readme (though a little bit outdated!)
-
- AmiNIX
-
- The Free UNIX for your Amiga
-
-
-
- The current version of AmiNIX is 0.8.91. This version is not available to the
- general public yet.
-
- There is not an AmiNIX FAQ at the moment, but the most common questions are
- answered below. Select one of the
- following:
-
- So where is AmiNIX?
- Requirements of AmiNIX
- Why use AmiNIX instead of NetBSD, Linux?
- Mail me (aminix@afn.org)
-
-
-
- So where is AmiNIX?
-
- Okay, I admit, AmiNIX is almost as bad as Windows 95 when it comes to
- vaporware. But, unlike Mr. Gates, I have
- been sorely in debt (and working my butt off to clear it) for the last many
- months. Now, after a long and tumultuous
- spring and summer, I am back to work on the beast.
-
- I have to thank all of you that have patiently (and impatiently) waited--your
- support convinced me that it is still
- worth finishing this project, even after dropping it for several months.
-
- If you want to be notified when AmiNIX is finally available, send an email to
- aminix@afn.org to that effect, and you
- will be added to the announcement list.
-
-
-
- Requirements of AmiNIX
-
- AmiNIX will require the following minimum configuration:
-
- 1. Any Amiga model
- 2. 68000 or better processor (all processors)
- 3. 1MB RAM
- 4. Floppy drive
-
- Of course, performance doesn't come cheap, so faster CPUs, a FPU, hard drives,
- more memory, and other goodies
- will all help. The point is, AmiNIX will run on *every* Amiga. No MMU is
- required, though by 1.0, MMU memory
- protection will be available for those that desire it (68030/68851 is partly
- working already; 68040 and 68060 are still
- unimplemented for MMU support).
-
-
-
- Why use AmiNIX instead of NetBSD, Linux?
-
- NetBSD and Linux both require a 68020 and a MMU. Not all Amigas have this.
- AmiNIX works on all processors,
- and best of all, multitasks (and cooperates) with AmigaOS.
-
- This doesn't mean AmiNIX is an end-all, be-all solution. NetBSD and Linux are
- both stable systems; their code
- has been tried and tested countless times. And AmigaOS does crash now and then
- by badly programmed
- applications, a looming overcast to using AmiNIX. However, for those that
- desire the ability to use some *IX
- applications alongside AmigaOS, or do not have the minimum requirements for
- NetBSD or Linux, this may be the
- best solution.

-
- >Just thought I'd throw this out and see what comments arise.
-
- Perhaps if enough people do ask, than the programmer will finish it!
