  33. As far as I know the UNIX running at the same time as AMIGA OS is called
  34. AMINIX. Apparently it's still being developed but I don't.
  35. The kernel is BSD compatible and needs EGS driver for gfx.

  60. Okay, I admit, AmiNIX is almost as bad as Windows 95 when it comes to
  61. vaporware. But, unlike Mr. Gates, I have
  62. been sorely in debt (and working my butt off to clear it) for the last many
  63. months. Now, after a long and tumultuous
  64. spring and summer, I am back to work on the beast.

  66. I have to thank all of you that have patiently (and impatiently) waited--your
  67. support convinced me that it is still
  68. worth finishing this project, even after dropping it for several months.

  76. Requirements of AmiNIX

  78. AmiNIX will require the following minimum configuration:

  80.   1. Any Amiga model
  81.   2. 68000 or better processor (all processors)
  82.   3. 1MB RAM
  83.   4. Floppy drive

  85. Of course, performance doesn't come cheap, so faster CPUs, a FPU, hard drives,
  86. more memory, and other goodies
  87. will all help. The point is, AmiNIX will run on *every* Amiga. No MMU is
  88. required, though by 1.0, MMU memory
  89. protection will be available for those that desire it (68030/68851 is partly
  90. working already; 68040 and 68060 are still
  91. unimplemented for MMU support).

  95. Why use AmiNIX instead of NetBSD, Linux?

  97. NetBSD and Linux both require a 68020 and a MMU. Not all Amigas have this.
  98. AmiNIX works on all processors,
  99. and best of all, multitasks (and cooperates) with AmigaOS.

  101. This doesn't mean AmiNIX is an end-all, be-all solution. NetBSD and Linux are
  102. both stable systems; their code
  103. has been tried and tested countless times. And AmigaOS does crash now and then
  104. by badly programmed
  105. applications, a looming overcast to using AmiNIX. However, for those that
  106. desire the ability to use some *IX
  107. applications alongside AmigaOS, or do not have the minimum requirements for
  108. NetBSD or Linux, this may be the
  109. best solution.
