- Icon allocation/loading is something that is fairly slow on the Amiga's Workbench.
-
- However, with Win95 explorer it knows exactly what icon corresponds to what
- extension. For example all ".bat" files will have the same icon. All ".iff" files
- will have the same icon (which is really annoying if you have ".iff" pictures and
- ".iff" sounds). Because of this, it can cache all the icons. The only file that it
- has to actually read an icon from is a ".exe" or ".com". Workbench on the other
- hand has to load every icon that it shows. Also the icon is loaded into CHIP ram,
- etc.
-
- Also, unless you are using AFS, the directory itself will be slower to load due
- to the nature of FFS.

- Your probably also using a faster PC, but that aside, Workbench is doing much
- more per icon, and that is probably the most inefficient part of Workbench -
- especially if you are viewing by name.
